w58 extention housing ?
 

Okay im planning on doing a transmission swap Auto to manual however when i got my w58 transmission i lacked the knowledge that the extention housing on an MKII w58 was shorter than the MKIII w58. ive waited and waited and searched a 250 mile radius at the pick a parts for a w58 out of a mkIII however im always too late and someone has already got it by the time i get there ive been putting this swap off for wayy to long and i really want to get started i have all of my parts just worried the shift column isnt going to be able to get into 1st 3rd or 5th so is there anyway i can cut this corner? Or does anyone know a place i can buy a used extention housing for fairly cheap ive already got an arm and leg in this.. Does anyone know what the measurement in difference is between the MKII w58 and the MKIII w58 i was thinking of making a custom shim to go inbetween the two halfs of the transmission and using rubber gasket on both sides with longer bolds and then just buying new shift rods for an mkIII.

Hell, a new one lists at about $300. Besides, there are a lot of Toyota W5X equipped vehicles which may have compatible extension housings that are far more common: Old Corollas, 4Runners, pickups, Cressidas and so on. I don't know what the differences are but I expect most will be much easier to deal with than what you're suggesting and far more reliable.

So does anyone know of any vehicles equipped with a w58 that has a compatible extention housing or can any one measure theirs? I'm sorry I kno almost nothing about transmissions I'm going into this blind other than the resources here on the forum.

Why would you swap out a MIII w58 with a MII w58?

:dunno:This is what Wikipedia has to say about the W58 so im guessing anything above an 86 had the same length extention housing as the MKIII? even it it did though wouldnt there be differences? How would i know if it would be compatible with the MKII w58 or if it would even fit right into my MKIII?

"It differs from the W57 in its fifth-gear ratio. This transmission is popular as a replacement for weak stock transmissions in other vehicles. It came in two varieties: the original found in the 1982-1989 non-turbo Supras, Celicas and Cressidas of the early 1980s; and the later version found in Mk3, Mk 4 Supras and Lexus SC 300s.
Toyota lists a change from an alloy sandwich plate to a steel sandwich plate around 1989. The steel sandwich plate has some minor internal differences, and it is believed to be slightly stronger (some wider bearings, some wider gears, slightly different gear selection mechanism, etc.). In theory the all-alloy version of the W58 should be exactly the same strength as any other all-alloy W-Series transmission. The steel plate version is considered much harder to find and worth approximately three to five times as much as an all alloy version.
The ratios and bolt patterns remain the same regardless of the sandwich plate used.
The W58 & W57 share the highest gearing and closest ratios (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (direct)) of the stock W-Series transmissions.
The ratio shift was accomplished by taking the W55 base ratios and changing the input shaft to intermediate shaft ratio by 7.9%, thus shifting 1, 2, 3 ratios higher by that amount. This also shifted the overdrive 5th gear higher by the same amount creating a wider and taller overdrive ratio.
The W58 is sometimes designated as a "close-ratio transmission"; however, in its stock form it does not meet all the criteria for a close-ratio box.
Toyota engineers have shown favor to the W58 over the rest of the 'W' series by including it in so many models and even building a stronger version for higher powered applications.

because i was told it was the same transmission and didnt know the extension housing was different. plus i was planning on getting one out of an mkiii but around South Carolina there arent many MKIII supras even in junk yards ive been waiting for around 6 or 7 months on one to get into a pull-a-part junk yard so i could get the transmission but they are always gone by the time i get there so i found an 85 celicasupra and got the W58 out of it. Got home and find out i screwed up.

Don't assume anything. The MKIV and Lexus models all used a smaller extension housing which had an external shifter carrier bracket attached to put the shifter even further back... Like the item in the first picture here:

This assembly would not work for the MKII, MKIII, Cressida, nor any of the trucks that I've seen.

I've given you a list of vehicles which come up when looking for specifically the extension housing in the EPC. I don't know what differences there may be but as they are all listed I suspect they may all be compatible to some degree. Check the EPC and see what you can find.

Keep in mind that there may still be other differences such as the configuration of the output shaft (length, diameter, spline count). If you can get the shifter in the right place any issue with the output shaft can be deal with by a good drive shaft shop.

Personally, I'd look harder for someone who's done a GTE/R154 swap or someone who's parting out in your area or neighboring states.
