Phenolic Spacer question if any?

i used to own a 97 Ford Probe GTS and I installed Phenolic spacers for the throttle body and intake manifold. If you dont know what it is it a special material used to put between the head/manifold/throttle body to keep alot of heat from transfering from the motor to intake for cooler air intake. I only know the Civics and Mazda KL series motors to have these. They work great during the winter and good during the summer. After driving for long periods of time I could put my hand on the manifold and it would be ice cold.

I wanted to know if there was anything like this out for sale or at least in development for any of the Supras. If so this would be great. I'll post pics when i get home.

suprra_girl 10-05-2005 12:56 PM

wow... to be honest have never heard of it... but sounds like a damn good thing...

as far as i know there isn't anything like that out there for the supras

supra_91 10-05-2005 01:40 PM

let us know when u find it. that would be nice to have:D

SupraMan1784 10-05-2005 04:13 PM

nah mk3's dont have those phenolic spacers....i know what they are...but ive never seen one..nor one for a supra they use those for rally cars too...modified versions obviously

If u want to know more about it www.outlawengineering.com makes them for alot of vehicles. They also have Toyota and Lexus coming soon on the website. I imagine that they would start with the 2JZ first and hopefully make there way to the 7M. The thermoblok kit for the Probe was only $99 when i got it. They seem to have added more items for only $6 more.

ahh interesting link....thanks jrok

Anytime Supraman!

Jrok25supra 10-11-2005 05:18 AM

Well, I emailed outlawengineering about Phenolic Spacers and they said they wont making spaces for the 7M anytime soon. They didnt answer me about the 2JZ but there are no other vehicles to make it for other than the Celica and MR2.

Phenolic spacers for 7m

hey guys, i just got an email from outlaw engeneering. thought id pass it on if someone wants do a group buy on them, suprragirl? they will design and cut em for us for $100 each if they get 20 orders.. It sure does sound interesting for sure. ....cold air = more power .

Joel,

Thank you for your interest in ThermoBlok Spacer Kits. We have been developing ThermoBlok insulators for many new applications, but the Toyota 7M is not currently on the list. Our prototyping work order is organized by demand and to date, there hasn't been much interest in insulators for this engine, yet. We generally request 20 commitments prior to the design, prototyping, and production of a new performance part. Pricing for a set, including intake manifold and throttle body insulators along with necessary hardware such as lengthened studs would be in the $100 or less range.

Please assess the interest for your group and let us know.

Best Regards,
Sean Morgan

count me in on a group buy. if/when

joel w 10-16-2005 10:44 PM

ok 2 of 20

ok thats 2 down.....ill take a set

SupraMan1784 10-17-2005 01:28 PM

damn hahaha if i still had a 7m i would be in on this order...but now i got a 1jz... wonder if they make spacer for that...think imight have a looksee

group buy questions

supra_91 says he may be interested in this thermo gasket also, but he wants to know who to pay and how to pay, ive never done a group buy and not sure what to? or what the proceedures are? suprragirl ? what the deal on group buys here. how do you sticky a post?

still need 17 more signups so no hurry yet...

Jrok25supra 10-17-2005 07:36 PM

hey, I already had a set on my Ford Probe and i started this thread. It know what they can do. Ofcourse, count me in. Thinking about buying another motor for the Probe so I can have a FWD and a RWD.

joel w 10-17-2005 07:40 PM

ok cool thats 4 down.. 16 to go lol...

hangsupra 10-17-2005 09:12 PM

first how much is it first... before count me on... hehe...

joel w 10-17-2005 10:00 PM

he quoted 100$ or less? most on his site are 99$

hangsupra 10-18-2005 03:03 AM

is that including shipping/handling too... with the $100....

joel w 10-18-2005 03:20 AM

that would be extra 6 to usa and canada as per their web site,
my best guess,

Interesting read at their website.

A little food for thought...and responce

So...on our street cars (I assume a different setup for race-only cars)...why not remove and by-pass the coolant lines/hoses that go to the throttle body and the ISC valve. ???

This would remove some of the heat on the throttle body and intake manifold.

Aren't these only heated for emissions control??

supra_91 10-18-2005 03:02 PM

count me in on the spacers

hmm. ya tuff call..
Outlaw Engineering does not feel that bypassing the throttlebody coolant passage is a very elegant solution to throttlebody heat for many users. This often leads to rough idle, increased fuel consumption and possibly higher emissions. Many TB's contain thermosensors that would never reach operating temperature. It is similar to running an old carbureted vehicle with the choke all the time. Also, there truly is the possibility of ice formation in the TB during the colder months without this system. With the addition of an insulator, the vehicle can operate as it was meant to and the intake will remain cooler.

.

Im with him on that one. I ask autozone last year because I notice that the throttle body was hot from the coolant running through it. They said if you bypass the coolant from going to the throttle body that would make the car idle high b/c of temp sensors in the TB. And that also leading to more gas consumotion and might even trip a code, but the air would run cool before entering the intake manifold. LOL. Not something I would take a chance with. Unless you got an older car without the ECUs.

Isphius 12-17-2005 10:24 PM

Thats a good idea. we should all order them lol... I did notice on my car that the intake manifold and throttle body get really hot, too hot to touch even a while after the car has been off. that probably isnt to good for power. maybe its cause the manifold goes right over the top of the engine and then the header....but if its insulated from the block it might stop a good ammount of heat from transferring.

Jrok25supra 12-18-2005 11:58 AM

I have a Ford Probe which has popup lights like the Supra does. One thing I did to keep the engine bay cool and keep my manifold cooler was take the headlights out and put foglights in for replacement. Looks good on a Probe plus keeps air running in the engine bay to keep it cool. This is a good mod if u like the look and u dont have a custom vented hood. I also cut two 2" strips out where the hood and windshields join or where the weather striping is for a constant flow. Believe it or not, not alot of water gets in the back of the engine bay.
