Cre is trying to tell you it is for a 7mgte. If it was a 7mge it would say "7mg" while the 7mgte will say "7mgt". The "e" on both is for electronic fuel injection. But since you have a ecu, knowing it is electronic fuel injection is rather obvious. Also the "t" is for turbo and "z" is for supercharged like the 4agze.

86-87 had yellow plugs and 89-92 had gray plugs. I'm not sure of 88's. So if it's has gray plugs it's for a 89 or high.

The yellow plugs will not fit the gray ecu. The plugs r different I would get a yellow plugged ecu or switch the hardness. I have a yellow plug ecu for a 7mgte and m/t for sell 50$ plus shipping. The guy that I got my gray plugged hardness from gave me that ecu but I can't use it.

Sounds like one of those '89s which had a mix of pre89 and 89+ components... they're real fun to find replacement components for sometimes. What's your red line, 6500 or 6250 RPM? You may have either a 6M or a 7M crank shaft.

What's the Toyota part number on the ECU? Should be something like 89661-12345.
