Blown turbo (CT26)... oops!!!

Well as the title suggests I've finally killed off the CT26 on my baby, I was expecting it to go sooner or later as I've been running it pretty ragged on the boost front (11psi & using it regularly) but in the end it turned out not to be the death I expected.

Instead of just rapid wear of the bearings & eventual oil burning which I was expecting... what actually happened was the silicone BOV signal pipe ruptured (it's split at the ends before, months ago but thought I'd sorted it) which resulted in one huge compressor surge when lifting off that disintegrated the bearing, caused the impeller to bite into the compressor housing which in turn bent the shaft (and as I found out last night on stripping down, sheared the turbine off the end of it!!!)

All in all one huge turbo death & one very lucky me not to have an engine full of bits of impeller vane. So now I've got the turbo stripped right down to bare bones & the major castings are fine seeing as I didn't run it for long in this state as I knew something was badly wrong by the lack of boost & awful noise. What I'm wondering now is can you get turbocharger parts seperately of can I buy just a refurbished core to keep costs down?

When funds allow I'm obviously going further with the build, better turbo bigger injectors etc, but for now I just could do with the car on the road quickly and cheaply as possible (hopefully just a couple of months, till I get my compensation finally!)

Sounds like that turbo's junk now. A used stock turbo will cost as much as a new turbine shaft. I would go that route until you can swing the upgrades. But if you want to rebuild it....

The shaft...lol.

Wow seems you're right on that, and then I'd still need the impeller as well on top of all that & importing it...

Just thought it was worth a check as I don't like waste & the housings and core casting are fine. Am now on the hunt for a decent used CT26 in the UK then I guess... (or even one that smokes/bearing shot as long as the shaft, turbine & impeller are in good nick, if it's cheap enough since that rebuild kit would work out then)

Don't try to rebuild it yourself... I'm sure you haven't the tools to properly balance everything and at 10K+ RP you better believe that's a crucial step... You're liable to end up in the same position.

Get your IC professionally cleaned and THOROUGHLY clean out all of your intake piping with a solvent... All it takes is one chip from that impeller to destroy the engine.

just picked up two lightly used ct26's today. light shaft play, both spin nice. if you need one, hit me up. also have a lexus afm and i believe 1 or two sets of 550's (need to identify the injectors still)

one is a 57 trim modified by Blitz, looks to be a pretty good piece.

Hmm, Blitz 57 trim? How much?
Maybe send him the turbine shaft and comp. wheel only to save him on shipping to UK.

Hmm, think I'm gonna leave trying to rebuild the turbo even as a temp measure. On looking there's a minefield of different housings with different inlet sizes & impellers all cast as CT26... And looking at some pics of other Supras I've got a somewhat larger compressor housing with A on it also... Not saying it's a CT26A as there seems to be some debate on that but either way I'm waiting till a complete unit either comes available or I can afford something more fun boost-wise

ive got one local guy interested, but hes kinda flaking right now.

as far as info on the blitz BAG turbo (as its known) the differences are: larger and heat treated compressor housing, larger compressor, clipped exhaust turbine (i cant see any apparent clipping) and rebalanced after all thus.

so its basically just a modded ct26, done by blitz. theyre original price was about $500 US. so as far as price goes, idk lol. its in good shape.

pics here.

ps- i may not be correct on it being a 57 trim, but it is definitely bigger than the stock turbo i have.

@ 87hilux, I'm interested. Let me know if it falls through. You can pm me if it does, so we can keep ma70-3.0gt's thread clean.

@ma70-3.0gt, That is a good choice. Best of luck with the hunt for a new turbo. I think mine is about to crap out too....yayeee!

Thanks folks, still saving up & hopefully will have the beast back on the streets this year... I may see if I can post up some pics of the carnage as a warning to ensure ppl's BOV/BPV is functioning correctly & the signal pipe is in good shape
