New to the world of supra
Yesterday I bought a 1986.5 supra and I would like to know a few things.
how do I know of tems is working? There are no lights on the dash. Do I use regular power steering fluid or a different kind of fluid? And how do I adjust steering wheel freeplay? Also any tips and things I need to know about this car along with interior parts |
I'm not sure on the steering free-play, but for the fluid you will use Dexron II (if you can find it). Dexron III is supposed to be compatible, I've read some problems people have had with it foaming up, but I haven't experienced this personally in the 3 working supra's I've had.
As for the TEMS, I wonder if someone changed out the gauge cluster.... You can hear if the actuators are working, you should hear them all move when you press the buttons no the center console (key must be on). But with a 20+ year old suspension (more than likely the TEMS struts are OEM), you're probably not going to notice a difference in the suspension even if they do work. |

You can manually set them with needle nose pliers (once you take the actuators off the top of them). The TSRM shows how they should be manually set for soft, medium, and firm. Here's the link.

With very few exceptions you're going to be limited to salvaged parts from people parting out their rides or junkyards as far as interior (and many exterior & engine) parts are concerned. Toyota does still offer a few, and some aren't even expensive depending on what you need, but be prepared to hunt most down and get your hands dirty pulling them. Just keep your eyes open driving around on the roads and on the boards.
