Hey guys. I recently bought a non-turbo 1986 Supra (7mge motor). It needs a lot of work, but I want to start with the manual 5 speed transmission. When I turn on the engine, I can shift through all the gears without out even pressing the clutch and I hear no grinding noises. When I do press the clutch, I can still go through all the gears, but the car never actually moves. I figured it just needed a new clutch but it worries me that I can shift through all the gears with the engine on and the clutch not pressed. Does anyone know what the problem is? Does it just needs a new clutch kit? Or do I need a whole new transmission? I also think there are two types of manual transmissions for the 1986 supra, but I dont know how to tell which I have.

Smell any burnt metal? The clutch IS the connection between the trans and engine, without it there is no transmission of torque into the gearbox. Another suspect would be the input shaft snapping, but not likely. Either way if you can put it in any gear without using the clutch and while the engine is running then the input shaft is not spinning. Pull the clutch out and have a looksee, I bet it's obvious once it's out.

No i do not smell any burnt metal. I'll be removing the clutch this weekend and replacing it. Should I get the fly wheel resurfaced? Not sure how to tell if it needs to be resurfaced. And is there a thread where someone replaced the clutch and included pics of the process? I searched but couldn't find any good pics. The TSRM is good, but I would like a better visual.

it is the clutch. the clutch disk being shot will allow you to shift into all gears without drawback while the engine is running. had this happen with just about every car ive owned. same thing every time.

while your doing the clutch it wouldnt hurt to flush out the old tranny fluid and put some good synthetic fluid in.

Yes, resurface the flywheel. If your clutch is that bad, the flywheel cant be in good shape. It may even need to be replaced. The machine shop should determine if it can be cut or not. This is a good thing if you just bought the car, it gives you a chance to give it a good under body inspection plus a new clutch! I'm sure there is more than a few threads about it on this forum and others with specs, pics, etc. if you search around. Good luck.
