Anyone sucessfully fix the rear hactch cover?

I accidentally put something in my hatch last year that pierced a hole in the rear hatch cover/sunshade. Now, the hole has grown and looks terrible. Has anyone been successful with a fix? The hole is large enough that I cannot cover it with a dollar bill. It has had a rough life, and shows signs of cracking in other spots due no doubt to UV damage.

I'd like to replace it, but haven't found a source that sells new/refurbished ones or can refurbish mine. The rest of the shade, like the roller unit with a good spring tension and the end that hooks to the clips on the hatch are in good shape. Just the fabric for the shade itself is weathered and beaten with a hole in it.

I was thinking of finding some fabric with UV protection and taking the shade unit to an upholstery shop to sew the hook end on (sliced off at a point of good fabric of course) and fasten it to the roller inside the shade unit.

But, if anyone has tried to fix it, I'd like to get some insight and warnings before trying this.

Personally I wouldn't bother, but if you insist I think the torsion springs are really going to be the worst part... that and the cost. Personally I was planning on replacing mine with a hinged fiberglass unit with a couple speakers mounted in it.

If it's already broken I'd just dig right in. If you can't fix it you'll be looking for a used one anyway.

I have seen used ones go for 20.00 - 100.00.. I would go the used route. Lots of them are in excellent shape.. just gotta find a seller. What color?

I probably have a blue one in the garage hiding that was in near perfect shape if I recall correctly...
