test run 8psi???

1 Attachment(s)
Finally go my supra running after all this work

Attachment 3950

However another problem happened I when to punch it and when I did my stock psi gauge shot well over 8psi I think I am hiting fuel cut off as well for a split second my car backfired and a light came on but when I saw the psi passing 8 I released. I bought my turbo from Drift motion and they stated that its limited at 8psi guess not. and I feel my supra is slower that ever all that noise and its going no where. do i need to put a boost controller and if i do are the manual boost controllers on ebay any good

Congrats on getting it running, looking nice .Good thing you have fuel cut, beats melting things. I would call Drift Motion and ask them about it.
I have that same i/c piping kit and I hate the crossover pipe. Why put those brackets for the pcv piping on if they don't line up with anything?? It kills me every time I look at mine.
Cheap "E-bay" boost controllers are what they are. Cheap boost controllers. You get what you paid for.
Looks like you are starting to spend a bit of money on the car. If it were me, I would save and get a nice electronic boost controller. They aren't too expensive used, just test it if possible and again you get what you paid for. I got a used Greddy Profec B for $100 off craigslist and love it.
Oh, and time to buy a real boost gauge so you can see exactly how much psi you are pumping. Well over 8 could be 10 or 20! 20psi + no supporting mods = high probability of a sad supra owner. Good luck and be careful.

If you are overboosting, then why do you want a boost controller? All they do is regulate the boost pressure going to the wastegate actuator, allowing you to boost higher. You can't "turn down" the boost pressure a turbo creates by adding a boost controller.

It sounds to me like maybe your wastegate is not opening either enough or at all. Is the vacuum line connected to the actuator? Is your downpipe interfering with the movement of the wastegate?

jcastro 05-22-2011 10:22 PM

the vacuum line is connected to the actuator and there is no tear or leaks. As for the down pipe interfering with the waste gate I can not tell I think I'm going to put my old actuator on from my old turbo and see how that goes if it continues to do it then its my down pipe messing with my waste gate thanks for the heads up I did not even consider that to be an issue

I thought a boost controller could help my friend installed a turbo on a 87 325 bmw and was over boosting even with a build in waste gate set at 8 psi similar to mine. We installed a boost controller and it helped that's why I thought this is the same issue with my supra

El Supracabras 05-23-2011 05:15 AM

Don't mess with the actuator if the turbo is new, you may void any warranty. Put a good boost gauge on and find out exactly how much you are running. If it reads too high, something is wrong and you should call and ask Drift Motion. It's not easy to mess up the install other than leaks (I believe the actuator and hose are already installed and set) . I've heard they're very helpful to their customers though I have yet to use them. My friend has a 57 trim from them and its a great turbo (hits 10 psi without a boost controller with the same upgrades as mine).
If you have downpipe/exhaust, intake or intercooler pipe upgrades you may see slightly higher than normal boost. With a 3" DDP, full 3"l hi flowing exhaust, 2.5" intercooler/piping and an intake I was seeing 9psi regularly with the stock ct-26 and no boost controller (5 speed). After I installed an electric boost controller it dropped to 6 psi max (with the controller off). I have no explanation for the drop in psi.

well iv been having a hard time reaching drift motion so i took matters into my own hands I removed the actuator and checked it the wast gate wast hiting or not able to open and it is able to move with ease so I am putting in the old actuator tomorrow thanks to poor lighting will let you guys know how it goes.

What was the waste gate or linkage hitting?
What changed, after the Driftmotion turbo install? Assuming this is a direct bolt on turbo, CT-26.
Just curious.
Oh, and boost controllers (manual or electronic) are highly recommended.

jcastro 06-06-2011 06:04 PM

the reason i removed it was because btwilson86 post this:

So i went in to see if I had any leaks and if the down pipe was interfering with the waste gate but i was not and seeing I have the stock actuator and no cash right now for a boost controller I plan to install the old one to see if it helps to get me back to the old 8psi.
