Does anyone know how much it would take to rebuilt a mkIII engine???

To a large degree that's going to depend on the quality of the components you choose to put into it. You can bring it in well under $2k for stock-level parts, or go well above it using performance-grade parts. Just depends on what you're looking to get out of the engine.

The big question here is who's doing the work, what level of rebuild and what are you planning on replacing? $500 to $5000 That's you doing OEM vs a shop doing a decent performance build. $500 to $1500 if you're doing it yourself and using OEM parts (not necessarily Toyota brand though).... Naturally it'll depend on shop costs in your area as well, these vary wildly in some cases.

I paid a little over 1,400 on parts and 1,500 for the shop to build it

i was going to rebuild mine too but i just got a new motor for it and i saved me alot of money ! i would check on ebaymotors they have a lot of good jdms on there but the only thing is that you dont know if they were beat on or not.

Seriously, with an engine that is going to be AT LEAST 20 years old the only thing you could honestly say isn't a time bomb is a rebuilt engine. I don't recommend swapping in any 7M (or any engine older than a decade) without a basic rebuild at a minimum... JDM, CDM, USDM, whatever the source.

My rule-of-thumb has always been: Take what you think it will cost and double it. About 6-900 for new pistons 130-ish for new rings...

A Properly built 7MGTE (if you do NOTHING yourself) that is capable of 500-600 HP is about 10,000 (where I live). You can get it rebuilt for about 3200.00 or even lower.. but note I used the term "properly" and gave the HP range.

If your really handy with tools though.. you can do it far cheaper.. but make sure you use a good machine shop for the head/block.

Of course.. "rebuilding" an engine means different things to different people. Repairing a 7MGTE is different then rebuilding...

And they're both different than "building" an engine or "building up" an engine. Where I live those are the terms you're going to hear for what you're talking about. A "rebuild" is just a tear down and complete restoration to stock specs. Repair is just fixing a HG or replacing the timing belt. "Building" an engine is to work from the base components toward any number of possible ends... typically for performance gains.
