speedo gear question

im converting from a340e to r154...
can the speedo gear from the auto tranny go into the r154?

From the EPC it doesn't look like it. What's the end gear you've got?

Isn't it just a matter of getting a new short piece adaptor for the R154? All Mk-III's use the same long piece speedo cable, right? I found a short piece speedo cable for my MK-III at my local dealer for about $40-45.

There's a different tooth count on the driven gear depending on the end gear and the W58 and R154 driven gears are NOT interchangeable... The housing for the driven gears on those two are, but the gears are different diameters... I don't know about the A340E though so getting a driven gear matching your end gear from the start is a smart move.

Yes, the short end of the speedo cable should be changed... Some claim you can make it work but I haven't tried it.

so wat would i have to order?

The driven gear for a R154 that matches your end gear... The R154 didn't have one? I see you're running a GTE so (unless it's been swapped) that negates the possibility of a 4.30:1 leaving either a 3.91:1 or a 3.73:1. The former was the LSD in '87 and '89 and the latter from '89 and on (in 7M equipped MKIII's anyway).

Oh, and I have a feeling the driven gear housing is going to be different too... check with a dealer or look it up on the EPC on cygnusx1.

It doesn't mean the gears will swap but it means you shouldn't have to swap the gears at all.
