Smoke all around the turbo

Ok guys I really need some help. Last week I was driving home and suddenly I could smell smoke and smoke started to fill the cab but as soon as I saw it it dissipated. When I got home I shut it down and let everything cool off. Later I popped the hood and revved then engine up and saw that when the turbo started to spool smoke poured out from around the downpipe. I decided to take this as a chance to install my new exhaust over the next couple days. I also tested the downpipe and found a large crack on the flex area so I thought the problem was solved. I got all the other parts installed started the car and tons of bluish smoke poured out of the muffler but im thinking this is from the car sitting for a couple days since the smoke was gone after the engine was warm. When I revved the engine up this time there is still smoke coming from the area around the turbo. I took the heat shield off so I could see exactly where the smoke is coming from and it looks like it is coming from all over the turbo. It smokes a little when the engine is just idling and smokes even worse when the turbo is spooling. I have some ideas but what do you guys think?

oil seals in the turbo. needs a rebuild

Thats exactly what I had been thinking until earlier I had a friend look at it with me and today it hardly smoked at all. Once it did warm up it began to smoke all the time not just when the turbo was spooling and he had the idea to stop the fan and all the smoke was coming from the small port between the pipes on the intake manifold near the front of the engine.

would still say it needs a rebuild. could be a water or oil leak and its pumping steam/smoke through the intake tract. the port also needs to be fixed too.

idk if anyone else has an opinion, but im with green on this one. old turbo, needs a refresh.

that smoke you see comming from near the front on the Exhaust side of the engine. (hot side, turbo side) is probably coming form a leaky CPS. or any number of gaskets on that side. I have the same problem.

Green I read your thread from when you had the same problem and that sounds alot like what I have going on. I also noticed yesterday that when I parked the car to work on it I had just changed the oil and everything was topped off and now after a week and a half of sitting it is half a quart low and there is noting on the floor in the garage other than power steering fluid (ive got a bad leak) so the seals in the turbo are most likely gone but I am going to pull the intercooler and see what I can find in there. This is probably related to everything else but yesterday when I started it up the birdcage came on and I had topped this off when I changed the oil as well. Any ideas?

hope its not your head gasket

Ive been meaning to replace it anyway but its still not something I want to get into right now. If I send the turbo to driftmotion to get it rebuilt with a 57 trim compressor wheel will they replace the oil seals as well?
