Supra slow to pick up power

Hi

I am wondering if anyone might have any ideas on this problem that has developed with my 87 MA 70 Twin Turbo. One owner.

Had local mechanic look at it who has done good work on this car before and he cannot find the problem.

He has checked things like fuel and air filters, cylinder compressions, intercooler and the pressurizations, changed plugs, checked timing etc.

Problem is – it lacks power up to around 3000rpm.
It seems to nearly reach around 3000rpm when the first turbo I think should be cutting in but then the revs drop to around 2500. When the turbo does cut in at around 3-3500 there is plenty of power. To me its like the automatic transmission is not going the gears smoothly like it did before.

Any help would be most appreciated

If it's an MA70 (or an MA71; look at your VIN and let us know which) then that's not the stock engine, in which case... who only knows the limit of possible problems.... well, I do and I'm sure many others here do too, but I think you get the point. What model engine is in the car?

Twin turbo? Sounds like possibly a jz. Post a pic if your unsure

If it is 1j. I have a few ideas! (common prob. with coils)

Supra slow to pick up power

Further driving the car yesterday ---- symptoms seems like

(a) automatic could be missing a lower gear ..it get up to around 3000rpm then sometimes quite forcibly changes gear and drops back to around 2500 then is slow to pick up to when the turbo pulls in
(b) but then it also feels like it could be some sort of fuel or electrical problem because on hill starts at lights it tries to pick up power and slowly does but is stunted in its pulling power again to around 3500 then the car goes fine.

Coil is something I have not considered mentioned within the forum

Unfortunately the 1G is a rare bird. It, like the 1JZ never saw North America but unlike the 1JZ it is not a popular engine. This site has become largely USDM and CDM centric and the resources you will find here are limited; I suggest trying UK, AUS and NZ based forums as the vehicle did make it to those markets (even if just as a grey market import). Perhaps BillUK may know of some resources for these.

Things I would start with checking are: diagnostic codes stored in the ECU, timing, air flow meter (isn't that a MAP based system?), speed sensor, igniter and coils, intake plumbing for leaks... then I'd start in on the transmission.

Thank you, I will try the forums and the check list mentioned
I think it is a MAP based system
Mechanic did check out codes earlier

A few in the UK, but not active on the Supra forums for many years, try Australia and New Zealand
