yea i did that mod too. One way to make it easier when trying to get the black part off is heating up the metal rod part with a torch and then twisting it apart. i got a lot of transmission noise though after i took that black part off but you will get used to it.

it's a short shifter, not a short throw, big difference. It will make it harder to shift, as it's not close to the steering wheel (watch real race cars), and you lose a lot of mechanical advantage to shift. IMHO you're just ruining the shifter...
