help swapping a 5 speed for an auto

i hav an 89 supra turbo. i'm looking to swap out the auto tranny for a 5 speed but i ran into a snag. i need a new wiring harness b/c mine is falling apart and so i want to just replace it so i don't have to worry about any wiring problems down the road. i will also re pulling the engine and rebuilding when doing the tranny swap. my question is: should i get a harness for an auto tranny or a 5 speed? the car also has ABS and i'm sure that makes a harness a little more tricky to find. a friend suggested a company called Painless Wiring. he said they have a lot of varities of harness. i haven't checked into it yet but if anyone also knows where a good place to get a harness would be that would be a great help. i'm looking for new or used, it just need to work. the question is for an auto or 5 speed though.

Depends what ecu you are using. I would suggest getting a 5 speed harness and ecu! I'm pretty sure all US supras have ABS. I have yet to see one that doesn't but I do not kno 100% on that. Also jdm r154 trannys do not have abs sensor so your gonna want to get a US one or spend 150 bucks on a sensor from driftmotion.

i had planned on using my 7mgte auto ecm. can i just trick the neutral safety switch or is there more i need to do? i have a 5 speed trans out of a 87 supra with a 7mge. will that one work or should i look for a different one?

You can trick it if you use another auto harness. But then you have more wiring then needs to be there with a 5 speed. The plug to jump is next to the starter! The w58 (NA trans) will work but you have to use a na clutch with turbo flywheel. Which you will be way over powering a stock na clutch so id recommend upgrading.. stay away from ebay clutchs.. The r154 (turbo) trans is alot more robust and reliable under higher HP. But it uses a pull style clutch not a push type like the w58.

so i should find a turbo 5 speed and find a 5 speed harness. i assume i will need to find a harness for a 5 speed that also has the turbo and abs connectors on it? or is the abs unit part of a different harness?

I would def. recommend an r154 but it is gonna cost you more money. But money well spent, cuz how good is a great engine without bein able to put it to the ground. The clutches for r154 last a lot better for higher HP.

If you use an automatic ecu. You HAVE to use an automatic harness that's the only way you can trick the ecu.

There is a few wires in the engine harness that are used for ABS. But like i said earlier your abs won't work on jdm trannys without buying the sensor.

well i think for the cost purpose at the moment i will probably use the n/a 5 speed since i already have it. so i won't need a sensor then? i also plan on getting a light weight flywheel and new clutch but i need to get a turbo flywheel and an n/a clutch correct?

Yea! You got it

Be easy on hard launches!

i won't be too hard on it until i build up the top end too :)

WTF?? Why would he use a R154 flywheel with a W58? Use the W58 flywheel... it's a tad smaller and lighter and there's no difference in contact area... besides, the W58's pressure plate won't fit the R154's flywheel as far as I remember.

No, most do not have it. It was an option only.

I'm pretty sure all you need to do is route the NSW through the clutch safety switch... it will operate just like a factory 5 speed as it prevents the circuit opening relay from closing unless the clutch is pressed.

Shit. Your right about the flywheels. I did some digging deep into my notes (from 7 yrs ago) and it is the w58 flywheel. I apologize

And the ABS thing is crazy! I have had 4 mkiii supras one na and 3 turbos, all had abs.
