7MGE Build

Ok so I'm wanting to get into drifting. I was in between a Nissan 240sx and a MK3 Toyota Supra and so far I am going with the Supra. I just have some questions. If I do end up getting a MK3 I dont really want to spend money on doing a 1JZ engine swap so I will be building up a 7MGE engine to about 400hp. Now Ive done lots of research on this topic, if the 7MGE will be good enough, and Ive got mixed views. This is my plan for performance:

-Take the engine apart and clean the engine
-New Pistons and Rods
-Performance Valves
-Port the head
-Definatley boost with intercooler (what psi do you think I'll have to acheive for these HP #'s?)
-Full exhaust system

Do you think I can reach these HP levels with these parts. I know I could definatley add more parts (cams, valve springs ect.) but I'm on a budget.
Also is there any design flaws with the 7MGE with high HP. I'm also planning on doing weight reduction as these cars are heavy. Give me your input guys, Thanks.

if you want to boost a 7mge, then youll have to convert all the electronics and plumbing over to 7mgte stuff. IMO if you wanna go thru the trouble you should look into a standalone system; megasquirt, AEM or various others, i will be going with SDS EFI. its antiquated a bit, but its a solid system, just not as sofisticated as some, with limited data-logging. with that type of setup you could easily hit 400 hp.

porting the head is gonna be a great. itll smooth out the power band. youll want a slightly bigger turbo than the ct26, but not too big. you want a broad power band, not a peaked one for drifting. i think its possible, with a lil tuning and healthy input for the motor. youll prolly wanna run a turbo style piston too, na ones arent gonna like anything over 8 psi, plus they will get brittle quicker in a drift app, lotta high rpm and heavy loads.

good luck!

First thing is to forget about 400hp from the 7mge. Go with a 7mgte at the min. since it is already turbo from factory and boosting a 7mge has been concluded to be not worth the effort. It probably would not be that expensive or that difficult to swap in a 1j with minimal work. And as far as weight reduction, it is possible but can get expensive once you reach a certain point.

ok thanks guys. Im also not sure what kind of exhaust system I should get. What kinds do you guys have in mind? Im thinking about 500$ for exhuast or less. Also if I was going to buy a full turbo kit with all new plumbing and such, then why would I get a 7mgte instead of getting 7mge to turbo.(I dont understand why I would pay more for a turbo engine when im going to be replacing the turbo parts) It will save me money but are the engines built internally different, like with more airflow or something? Thanks.

The 7mgte is lower compression with oil squirters for the pistons and has a block with the ports drilled for the oil lines. Also the manifolds are different as well as a coil packs instead of a distributer. In the end you should go with the most reliable set up for something high stress like drifting.

With the 7mgte u can have the turbo rebuild and upgraded to a 57 trim the ct26 is a good turbo already and then just add a 3" turbo Back exhaust and new inter cooler you will be close to 400hp or more with a fuel system and up the boost

All the drifting and unrelated banter has been moved HERE.

Paintball, this is only part of the picture:

The GTE is also tuned for boost. Stock electronics and just a couple small piggy backs with some tuning can net you 400... The GE is either going to require a swap over to the GTE electronics, a stand-alone engine management system or some much more complex piggy backs in order to tune timing, fuel and boost. The 7M's air flow meter isn't great and the distributor interferes with the turbo's intake. I've been there done that and don't recommend that route to anyone anymore with no regard for their level of experience.

Forged and coated pistons make up for the lack of oil squiters to a degree. Also, make sure you add an oil cooling setup, the GTE has one, the GE doesn't... GTE oil pump too... I'm sure there's much more but I haven't slept so I'll post back if I think on it.
