88 supra turbo ticking from top end
I just got the car yesterday with 85000 miles on the body and 700 miles on a fresh rebuild with receipts. The guy said that there were aftermarket lifter springs which he thinks is cause the ticking. It speeds up when revving the engine but does not affect the performance at all. I'm new to the supra world but am not new to tinkering with cars. I know these don't have push rods but from previous experiences it sounds identical to that. Also the oil pressure is around 20 psi at 3000 rpms if that makes any differences. He also had it bored over 020. Any advice would be great. Thanks

I just had my motor rebuild and I have the same tapping as you does the tapping stop or get quieter after it's been run about 15-20 mins like mine. my tapping started about 300-400 miles after the rebuild and is about up to 1000 miles now mine just started burning oil the other day and I found out that they torqued my head bolts to 58 lbs and not 70lbs so I'm thinking with the new motor the head gasket shrinks a bit and now is looser more and now the head gasket it slapping between the head and block so I'm taking it to the rebuild shop and let them look at I will let u know what happens

Well mine ticks the same amount after it warms up. I'm hoping mine is just an unseated valve but please let me know what they say.
|
So urs keeping tapping after warming up and has it start burning oil Also check ur header and spark plugs they can cause tapping to that sounds the same and I will let you know what the shop finds

It could just be the injectors, they are noisy on toyotas. Even the ones on my 2zzge are like that too. Thats why the ticking gets quicker with more rpm. Alot of people confuse them with valve noise. It could be what you are hearing.
|
I'm 98% sure it's not the injectors. This is definitely louder than what an injector could do. But I will still check each injector.
|
If you can't identifiy it by ear then you can always take off the cam covers and check the cam clearances.
|
I know how to tear it down, but exactly how do I measure the clearances? Thanks for all your help

With a feeler gauge you can measure the gap between the lobe and the shim ontop of the bucket that sits over the valve stem. Here is the link to the TSRM.

Ok I'll try to get a feeler gauge tomorrow and try that.

Ok I heard from the shop that build my motor they said my tapping is from my #1 piston but mine is alittle different from Urs mine is burning oil and the tapping stop after warming up and ur doesnt so I think ur is a different tapping I hope so now I have to pull the motor again so theY can fix it but it will not cost me anything Cause of the warranty thank god

Mine was burning some oil. It was blowing it out the exhaust. I'm going to look through everything since I have the engine out of the car.

It's not rod knock it's piston slap on a new build motor
|
Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a piston slap and a rod knock?
|
I think if u have the car running and pull off the spark plugs wire one by one if the sound changes that's piston slap when mine had rod knock before the rebuild it only knocked between 2500-3000 RPMs

The thing is which every it is, it still is a pain to take care of.
