MKIII stock performance - solution to silly problem

Sooooo, i have had my supra for 3 weeks and was a little disappointed in the performance. I noticed the tranny did not kick down all that well when trying to get up and go. You may have seen a previous post. I just was not impressed with the acceleration.

Today I happened to reach down and noticed the floor mat was bunched up under the flippin gas pedal. Are you kidding me? I was only depressing a little over half throttle.

Today I have a new respect for the speed of the car, even if it is a 7MGE. LMAO. Unreal.

Now if I can fix the power steering leak for cheap I will be a happy camper.:bigthumb:

thanks God you didn`t start working on the tranny or took it to a mec. like you said man , "solution to a realy silly problem. take care. Q

Ha ha no joke man, the mechanics already want to take me for a ride on the power steering leak. $1900 to change out the whole system? Yeah right. I think they are trying to rip me though i just see a leak coming from a tie rod seal on the rack. I can live with a rack replacement, but not the pump, hose, and the whole works.

fantasma87 10-07-2010 07:50 PM

1900 :outahere: hell no, man like i said , i`m new with this engines and supra but if something comes up , I WILL DO EVERYTHING THATS UNDER THE BOOK to fix it , if not :wavey:. good luck . Q

Yea you can check around people are parting cars out a lot and you can get a used good rack for under $100, it is a pain to replace but still. Also if you want to keep a supra you will need to be rich or learn to do a lot yourself. There are plenty of walkthroughs on almost everything on the car.

rjSupra 10-11-2010 09:56 PM

I had the same problem on my car. A slug on test drive and I bought it anyway. Many days later I decided to check if just in case... and sure enough, the mat was doubled up under the gas. Also have probably the same PS leak you might have.
I think you can get a re-built PS pump for $100 - $150 pretty easy. (you can do it yourself if you're adventurous - but I won't be).
The PS pressure lines are pricey but it's a whole kit. $100 at Robbins, and $60 at Autozone.
The rack, I read you can get rebuilt (or same as above do it yourself), and get a used re-built one for maybe $130. I was more or less hoping so.
I read here that the boot is only a dust seal, and it's an internal gasket, so if it's shot, the whole rack needs to get gone.
Let me know how it works out. Currently I am driving with no PS (actually not driving), until I fix this nasty mystery coolant leak which is hidden in the CPS / WP area...

That is odd we have had almost identical circumstances. Although I am still driving her around the general area. She sat for the last 3 days and went from cold/max level to cold/min level. I have started the second bottle of lucas stop leak, but I know the inevitable.

Unfortunately, i do not have the means to do the work myself, so I am at mechanic mercy. I'm okay paying 800 for a new installed rack, but when they started talking pump and everything else for a 1900.

Taking her back to Meinkle where I had a rack replacement quote for 650, although he did not visually inspect. If they start talking pump and all when they see it, I guess I am screwed.

Like I mentioned, I personally see only the leak from the one boot area. I think them telling me the hoses and pump is leaking is a hustle.

Good luck with the coolant leak. I hope our situations do not become identical there. But that is pretty damn funny about the floor mat. I couldn't believe it.

Yea I think the supra with a 7mge is a pretty fast car but everyone looks down on them because they don't have turbos

kingison 10-12-2010 04:10 AM

I have not driven a turbo, or even a stick MkIII, so I guess that's two strikes against my car. I have no basis for comparison with those.

I'd have to say though I drove my old 03 stock 5-speed eclipse gt the other day, and I am thinkin they are pretty close. Maybe not right off the line, but then again I am not really dragging the supra any. Just pure throttle to floor.

It ain't bad.

Sonyps307 10-12-2010 04:28 AM

I haven't driven a turbo to but mine is a 5speed and it has a little more pull but mines just been rebuild and has high compression now and I have a header to and I heard with a auto u lost 30-50 hp

kingison 10-12-2010 04:53 AM

Really? I doubt the auto is that poor. Have you driven one? 2nd gear has a pretty lunge to it, and other than a quicker line start, I would only see a 5 speed with a slight advantage. Not sure if I would place the difference that high. Seems to perform as listed stock around 200 hp.

I'd like to try out a 5 speed.

Sonyps307 10-12-2010 04:57 AM

Yea the 5 speed is fun to drive

my 2 cents on the screamer

I'll weigh in here,
my turbo 1988 is a weak little kitten. very unimpressive.
BUT when you spool up the turbo and it hits, it is a pure screamer and drives your back into the seat like almost no other car I've been in... it's pure grins and giggles... way more exciting feel than say my Acura Integra and other much quicker cars. It 'feels' a lot faster than a Porsche Boxster for example. Don't know what the numbers would say, but comparatively, that Boxster is a bore. (I think the tires are too grippy for it's own good).

I also hear the stock non-turbo feels faster and stronger by a measurable amount if you compare it to the turbo and don't have the turbo boost up. There's different compression ratios etc... that make the N/A car feel faster at low revs, low torque etc... But again, I have to guess the N/A can't really compare to the turbo on boost or full boost. My two cents. And by the way, I am driving an auto. (I wonder a lot about the 5 speed - I got sold all the parts to convert it with the car, but am a) 'chicken' to convert at the moment, b) have to use in heavy traffic until I have another daily driver c) dealing with some other significant mechanical problems that have the car sidelined and un-driveable until I repair them (mystery top front motor coolant leak, and very bad PS fluid leak for example).

Sonyps307 10-13-2010 03:01 AM

My non turbo 5speed was just rebuild and now has higher compression then stock it pulls pretty good and the non turbo also has more aggressive cams then the turbo

Metaphysico 10-30-2010 07:33 PM

Actually the na has the same cam lift as the turbo its just the na exhaust cam is timed a little different, I have not put a degree gauge on each one to check but you can visibly see a slight difference in how they are clocked on the cam.

The na also has a different geared rear end and more power and torque on low end than a turbo does. So off the line the na is more fun but after 5 seconds when your up to full boost and going good the turbo just pulls and pulls then pulls some more. Just gotta watch out for wheel spin going into second and third gear and fourth gear if you have more than stock boost.

I love my na for a good nice reliable car but I also love my turbo to haul ass and take names.

Sonyps307 10-30-2010 07:41 PM

Yea that y I'm getting ready to get a supra turbo as a toy and keep my na as my every day

i dont know, my auto still flys when you punch it. the beauty of a an auto is no turbo lag changing gears:bigthumb:
