Im sorry officer, my speedo dont work!

Need a little help ..got the 87 running and driving, but i have no speedo. Tach oil temp and gas all work fine. anybody have this problem b4? Wanting to know if there is something im over looking or is my computer bad or possible cluster?

The speedometer is completely mechanical, so check that the cable end behind the cluster is firmly mounted and that it's meeting the nipple on the back of the speedo. If it is then check each segment of the cable for breaks.

The speedo cable is in two parts. The short cable can be completely removed from underneath. One half screws into the speedo gear attachment on the side of the transmission. The other end connects to the long cable about 2 feet away.

My speedo stopped working 2 years ago. I checked this short cable first and found it to be broken. I used a cordless drill and the broken end of the cable to verify the long cable was still working. I greased up the long cable as described by other posts, replaced the short cable, which was fairly cheap and still in stock at my local dealer, and got my speedo back.

Since we are on this subject. Mine jiggles till it hits about 20mph then after that it is stable. Is that normal?

loose connection either on the transmission or cluster. it could also be worn out

Speedo cables

A few years back, mine died, found that the little cable connector (down by the tranny) had broken:

Attachment 3476

So I replaced it. The replacement broke! So I checked the rest of the cable and it was all gummed up, so I replaced those parts (total of three sections...I think. Anyway, shortly the little one broke again. Come to find out the trip on the speedo wasn't working and it kept breaking them. Once I replaced the speedo, it was fine, still works today, although the engine no longer works! :frown:

Mine jiggles till it hits about 20mph then after that it is stable too!!! I replaced it because the previous one broke and the dash started flashing "overdrive off" or something like that. Drove the car around for a few months and the transmission went bad,,like really bad, I could not even go into reverse anymore!!! The cause?: small insignificant $20 dollar speedo cable ... I advice everyone with an automatic transmission and a non working speedometer FIIIXXX ITTTT! or you'll be spending more money.
