Power Steering

I have a bad power steering leak. I can see it coming from the gear below. I am not very mechanically inclined and lack the tools to tinker with it. Will Lucas stop leak help?

if it does help the problem will return again really quickly. if its that big a leak, or any leak at all you're always best off to fix it properly the first time.

Be careful, I fixed the leak in my power steering pump that when producing a proper pressure blew the rack in pinon steering unit that drained the pump blowing it too.
You think a Toyota dealer would know better!

Yeah the pump itself is okay, half a bottle has slowed the leak substantially... Will keep an eye on it. Of course, when I bought the car last week there wasn't a leak, now there is....nice

Guess it's better than an engine or tranny leak though...

I learned in A&P school that stuff does not really work. You need to get your rack fixed ASAP. There are seals leaking in it and if one blows you will be in for an expensive bill. Rebuilt racks are not that expensive and a good shop can install it.

Yeah uh that pretty much sucks, LOL. I honestly think I may just re-list the car for sale and attempt to break even. What kind of cost might you figure I am looking at to fix it. I am not very mechanical. The leak is coming from that thick rubber area on the rack. It was like drip, wait 30 seconds, drip, wait, drip....

kingison 09-28-2010 11:12 PM

Anybody want my supra?

The rack itself is about 200 dollars. I am not sure what a non Toyota shop would charge to replace it. Perhaps the leak can be fixed. You need to take it to a shop.

Fuuuuuuuuuuu I can see potentially getting ripped on cost. 200 plus labor, or even fixing is more money than I have.

Gonna throw up an ad and see if i can break even...

Well check the connections first, it could always be a loose hose.

kingison 09-29-2010 04:18 AM

Yeah I am going to get it checked out tomorrow. Thanks, I hope it's not bad.

kingison 09-29-2010 04:20 AM

Surprisingly as soon as I put up an ad i had 5 quick interested calls for $500 more than I paid. Maybe she is a keeper...

kingison 09-29-2010 08:04 PM

Of course Meineke wont actually inspect the problem. They went ahead and quote me $645 to change out the rack and pinion system altogether. Said hey if it's leaking it needs replacement. hmmmm

Upon inspection I see the black rubber seals have simply cracked and split apart. On drivers side where leak is, it is coming thru the black rubber seal. Cant they just throw on a new seal? I understand there may be an isuue beneath the seal. But i doubt it would be leaking if the seal was intact.

Ranma 09-29-2010 09:17 PM

Well a rebuilt comes with lots of things including the interior tie rods.

kingison 09-29-2010 09:52 PM

645 isnt bad i guess but sheesh, i just bought the dang thing. Think I will say f it and just hold off and not take it on long trips. Just keep filling when it gets low.

Ranma 09-29-2010 11:03 PM

Just be careful, you could lose your power steering pump like me.

kingison 09-29-2010 11:21 PM

I find it amazing they cant just replace a tie rod seal and throw a new bushing on this. Another shop quoted me 800 bucks. I need to become a mechanic.

kingison 09-29-2010 11:22 PM

could have got one with a 5 speed and turbo for the extra cost :crazy2:

kingison 09-29-2010 11:51 PM

if i see the ass that sold me this car again.....

Ranma 09-30-2010 02:29 AM

Well these are old cars, I think this is a common problem with the Supra. My Japanese version just started to leak as I left Japan. Mine did not really start to leak until the power steering leak was fixed.
Good Luck dude!
