Clutch?
 

Okay, so my brother is the one with the problem. He has an '87 Supra Turbo that tends to chatter about 50% of the time on take off. There is no other problem like slipping or noise from the clutch, it just chatters on take off.

Definition of chatter: It sounds like a chatter but it does shake the entire car. It's almost as if the diff locks and releases, it gives you that sort of feeling. You can feel it in the shifter and through the floor as well as hear it very loudly.

Any ideas on what the cause could be would be great.

What kind of clutch does it have the ones that have the big pads and no springs in them have chatter when used on the street and it could be caused by uneven wear on the disk to

I'm assuming it's a stock clutch. He just bought the car about a month ago so he has a bit of a learning curve to contend with, I guess this weekend we'll have to tear it down and see what kind of clutch he has in it. *prays for a six puck*

If it's got 6 pucks then it's for racing only clutch

6 pucks are usually plenty streetable.... but yes, 6 puck or less have more and more chatter. A OEM style disc with a very high clamping force pressure plate can cause chatter.

Chatter can happen whether the disc is sprung or unsprung. With a sprung OEM disc if a couple of the springs or rubber bushings (as were the case in mine) break up you may also experience a lot of chatter.

The bitch of it is that the only way you're ever going to know is by pulling it.

Yea I just put a new one in mine if ur going to pull it u should just replace it any ways

I was hoping by this weekend I might be able to scrounge up enough that we can put a new clutch in it. If not it will be good to know why it's chattering anyway. Is there anything that I should be concerned about as far as fatigue on other parts?

Replace pilot bearing 11$ and throwout bearing 70$ that's what i paid at Toyota

I wouldn't blindly swap the clutch until you know what's in there. If it's desired you can learn to drive a performance clutch with less kicking, bucking and chattering. I agree on the bearings, definitely worth doing while you're in there and check the flywheel for any hot spots or other anomalies... if there are any get it resurfaced.
