Valve covers
gona paint them this weekend.
was thinkin of black with another color for the writing. lets here some ideas... car is white. |
Red would jump out, but white would be good too since it'll tie the exterior color in. Are you planning anything else to be a different color (like ignition wires, brackets, timing cover, etc)?
Or you can paint it black, and polish the letters back to aluminum. THAT would be nice |
that sounds nice,
what would i use to polish it back to aluminum? steel wool, or fine sand paper? |
I'd use a low speed dremel tool or something similar to clean the paint of of the area you want polished, then using sandpaper sand it by hand building up to a reallllly fine grit.
I once had a set of 7MGE covers that I sanded smooth ending with 1000 grit paper, they looked damn nice. No more casting pits or marks of any kind, but still weren't to that shiny polished look. However, they were almost there. I'd guess you'd want to reach 1500 grit, and then use high temp clear coat paint to give the whole cover a nice, glossy finish. You'll probably need to use a clear adhesion promoter for the sanded parts. I believe Duplicolor makes the adhesion promoter and high temp clear coat. |
yea that would be nice. --> green7mgte likes this <---

I have a white car and I painted the cam covers with a white engine enamel.
Nothing fancy, just clean. If you wish, I can snap some pictures. Oh..Very easy to keep clean... |

Dang, I like it. Doesn't jump out at you, it's a nice subtle touch up. Not to mention the clean engine bay all around tying everything up real nice
|
dam dude.
didnt think white would look so nice, is it flat or a gloss i cant even tell... youv got one of the nicest engine bays i ever seen on a mk3... think im gona go with either black or white, and ill probly either color or sand the letters out. |
do you ever drive that?
|
Thank you for the compliments gentlemen.
The pictures dont show it, however, the paint is a gloss engine enamel. This is the second time I painted them white. The first time I used a standard gloss white paint which chiped with a slight touch. The engine enamel has held up well. The idea of polishing the raised areas is a good one. I considered it and decided since 2/3 of the covers are hidden, I didn't wish to spend the time. I admit, it is not a daily driver, but yes, I do drive it. It's garaged and covered, never driven in the winter, and I am very anal about keeping it detailed. |

http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/...picture715.jpg http://www.toyota-supra.info/forums/...picture714.jpg Its not as good looking as it could be but 10 times better then it was. Since the 7mge valve cover markings are indented I painted the letters and then sanded the rest to bare metal. |
Cam cover pictures
Personally, I would like to see some more photo's.
Anyone else willing to share? |
