ooh boy, auto to manual tranny swap question.
i want my 87 supra (N/A) to be manual.
whats the best route to take. there is no way to trade the car for a 5 speed, or buy a project 5 speed either. so what can i do? this is a really big issue for me.. can i take a transmission and motor out of a similar car? if so would it be worth it? any help please, like ive said this is a really big issue for me...thanks |
bump bump!
|
You can swap a 5 speed in but you need all the parts like transmission, clutch, clutch pedals, master and slave and hard lines And you have to do something else to the wiring I think to
|
i know that, but nowadays you can seldomly get ahold of a supra 5 speed tranny...
is there any other car i can take the tranny out of? |
Toyota Cressida some years had 7mge in them
|
you need:
w58 5 speed transmission front half of drive shaft from a 5speed clutch and brake pedals from a 5 speed hard line that goes from master to slave clutch cylinders master and slave clutch cylinders (i would buy new) Clutch and flywheel for w58 what would be nice: radiator from a 5 speed. all rubber boots to protect from dirt and leather shifter boot. and of course you need to trick your neutral safety start switch: http://i24.servimg.com/u/f24/12/44/02/09/86_00411.jpg remove this from your auto tranny and plug the wires back into your engine harness in the P Park position, or the car will never start. good luck. did i miss anything?? |
thanks. where can i find the wh8?
easiest haha this was good thank you, i new what i needed but miss acouple things. should i find a junk cressida and take the tranny out of that? |
most 5speed cressida aorund my area have been scrapped for there 5 speeds and 5m and 7m engines.
i would honestly just try and buy a super rusty 5 speed supra same year as yours and that way you see it all come off, and can put it all back on without problems |
sorry
sorry i didnt make this clear..
i know what i need, well some what, so pointer in that would be good what im trying to really ask is whats the easiest way to get my hands ahold of a 5 speed tranny and most or all the parts? sorry for that, bad on my part for not clarifying my true question |

its you who is not understanding. "buy a rusty supra for its 5 speed tranny" that way you get EVERYTHING not just a tranny. you get the pedals... cylinders...hardline... clutch... not to mention all the dirt boots and leather boot... |

ill see if i can find a rusty supra, idk if i can its not popular in my town, literally, there is only one supra in my town, its a 91 tt. |
find the parts where you can. but the easiest would be to find a super cheap 5 speed supra. because im not sure if the cressidas 5 speed drive shaft will work in the supra.
good luck finding the parts. |
found w58 just gotta get the money,
also got a hook up to a really good salvage yard, might find em all there.. hope so atleast.. im tired of automatic.. car smashes on other cars from a start but on the freeway or from a roll i dont need manual for thaat haha plus its fun as hell |
Yea I have 5 junk yards in my area and they all had at least 1-2 supras in them but not one was a 5 speed but it doesn't matter to me mines already a 5speed
|
wow i got an offer on a tranny
I GOT NO MONEY! >_> wack! i know same here, but soon ill have my tranny, quick question.. the w58, is it a good tranny? other words..i wanna eventually put turbo on..should i just get r154 or take the w58? i wanna make sure im not spending money on something that i have to swap out later on.. |
The R154 weighs a good amount more but is FAR more robust. It's not as smooth shifting as the W58 though. You don't need the neutral start switch still in the car, remove the AT's computer and wire the NWS's two wires into the clutch safety switch.
You're going to need a lot of little parts too... |
yeah, when the time comes, becuz i keep losing my list to the parts i would need for the w58 swap, ill post asking for a list
unless its possible for someone to do it now lol which im sure it is.. |
The w58 can only hold about 350-400 hp so if you plan on getting more u will want the r154

if your really motivated to do so, you can set up the wires so that the car will only start when the clutch is pushed in, just like a standard. but personally i like having the switch under my hood, that way whan i park my car some where i don't want to, i know its not gona get stolen. |

so I'm sure it is possible for you to scroll up or go to the FAQ and start researching, because im done doing it for you. |

A large amount of what you're looking for a is very commonly discussed and very easy to locate... why should they have to keep digging up stuff from this forum just to repeat it? A little self-sufficience will get you in a lot better with the locals. ;) Just a tip. |

ill keep the look out for the parts, i guess what im asking for is, i dont wanna miss parts... soo heres my list so far w58 tranny bellhousing...(is that for a particular motor?) clutch master cyl slave master clutch and brake pedals, stick shifter my auto ecu would work fine am i correct? and anything else? i looked and people listed parts but seemed to small for the actually swap, so i just wanna be sure, and with your guys knowledge(more then mine) i can make that happen :) |
Yes, bell housing is both engine and transmission specific. The bell housing from either a 7M equipped Cressida or N/A Supra will work. You also need a 7M-GE flywheel and I believe the starter needs to be changed... IIRC that is. The front half of the drive shaft is different. You'll need a shifter, boot and I think the interior bezel is different.
