I suggest you replace the stock phillips head cover bolts with stainless steel allen cap screws (6 X 1.5mm thread, 25mm long, 12 qty).
Make sure you replace the bolt seals for all of the cam cover bolts along with the cam cover gaskets. In the event you have not purchased the Cam cover gaskets & bolt seals, you may wish to check out driftmotion.com. They sell the complete set (two cover gaskets & 12 bolt seals) for $21.00 (engine parts section).
Compressed air. Hopefully you have a compressor. When you have the coil pack, intake cross over pipe, & throttle assembly removed, prior to removal of the cam covers, blow the top of the engine off very well. Any debris around the base of the cover will fall into the cam gallery.
Last but not least, Pink Floyd and cold beer make the whole job go sooooo much smoother.

Was it this forum that the great debate between copper and Iridium happened?

I haven't heard of any problems with anti seize if used correctly... I use it everytime I change spark plugs; call me crazy but I just don't like breaking the plugs in the cylinder head :nono:

Thanks you guys

thanks guys i already bought the seals today and am going to my work tmmrw to clean all my shit... =D also i think i am going to use anti-seize don't need any issues.

Do the oil plugs also. The 4 plugs on top of the head since they are a likely overlooked place for an oil leak.

I just did this on my MX83 Cressida (7MGE) and eliminated the #3 cylinder head cover; wish I would have done this in the past on my Supra's, the 7M looks better IMO without this cover, plus I can change plugs easier/monitor any potential oil leaks in the future without that thing in the way

907mge 07-14-2010 01:33 AM

Yeah I got rid off mine also since there doesn't seem like any real reason for it.

Green7mgte 07-14-2010 01:42 AM

yea i threw mine in the garbage after reading IHateHacks post awhile back. good looking out on replacing the stainless steel allen cap screws..
wish I would of thought of that before I stripped one.. "scratches head, wounder how im going to get it back out.."

mjg.. wered you get those stainless steel allen cap screws (6 X 1.5mm thread, 25mm long, 12 qty).

From a local vendor, High Strength Bolt, in Kent Washington. As the name implies, Bolts are what they sell and they have a huge selection.
Perhaps you can find a vendor in your area, similar to High Strength, in the yellow pages.
253-872-7905 is the phone number if you want to call them. They will ship orders to out of state customers, if you can not find a local vendor.
And they do stock the stainless steel allen cap screws in metric as well as standard threads.

wierd why i didnt find that page in supra sport.. i look at it all the time.

thanks for the link! ill defiantly purchase a pair before I take my valve covers off next. wounder if they sell the grommets too.

cre 07-18-2010 05:48 PM

A fastener supply in just about any city should carry these bolts and grommets. The bolts are easier to work with but do not use them as an excuse to over tighten the covers. The spec is 22 INCH pounds for a reason.

I'm still waiting for someone to go with spring loaded fasteners with 2lbs springs.

ok before I purchase

Metric socket head screws, Stainless A-2 (18-8), 6mm x 1.0 x 30mm Each

yea? no?

cre 08-05-2010 01:15 AM

I think I used 25mm; 30 should be just fine though.

Green7mgte 08-05-2010 01:53 AM

good, good
supra sport wanted 15 + 10 to shipp..
http://www.suprasport.com/Valve-Cove...Kit_p_295.html

http://www.twosrus.com/
wanted 16+3 shipping

found something else online that was $3 for the screws and 10 for shipping. im looking tomorrow for something local. Ill just dig around till i find something I can pick up. so just as long as those specs work im in good shape.
thanks for the input
probably going to order these
http://www.boltdepot.com/metric-socket-products.aspx

so would you use the 25 or the 30? for length?
according to a sogi page they used the 30.
let me know Im gonna place the order tomorrow. if i cant find anything local.

also im no metallurgist. stainless steal? zing coated? the black finished ones? what will avoid corrosion and be a good strong bolt?

cre 08-05-2010 02:33 AM

25 or 30 is fine, grab whatever you find, I had originally used female hex bolts, but later replaced them with pan head conventional hex bolts... they're just regular bolts with a broad washer like surface to distribute pressure. Got them in stainless for around $5 at a local Ace hardware store.
