Hi again all

I have recently started having problems with my car, its an 88' 3.0l auto, the problem is that especially when its cold i get a noise coming from somewhere under the bonnet but only whilst turning the wheels, if they point straight its silent but as soon as you steer the noise starts and then stops again when straight, The noise itself sounds a bit like something is rubbing somewhere but i am not too sure, any ideas anyone ?

Also whilst i am here can anyone tell me about a replacement air filter. I am after replacing the standard one with an induction kit but in the UK i cant seem to find the top hat adaptors for this car to fit the appropriate filter to, Is it possible to remove the air flow meter thing and just replace the lot with a new induction filter or does this piece of equipment need to stay on no matter what ?

Thanks again and pics coming tomorrow i hope lol

thanks jester, its much appreciated,

I have also noticed tonight that whilst making this weird noise the car also doesnt steer lightly, its almost as if there isnt any power steering at all but as it warms up its fine again, i have checked power steering fluid and all is topped up ok, also i have checked all the tires for uneven wear or even low pressure but all those are fine too lol.
Any suggestions are welcome :-)

it might be your tires, im going to ask my friend today what was wrong with his car, but if your steering is off, and when you turn it makes noise your tires could be maybe underinflated.... sorry but i have no idea what a bonnet is

i have checked all tyres and all are at perfect pressure, sorry a bonnet is english for i think what you call a hood (the big flap that covers the whole engine lol)

Jester 12-03-2004 11:01 PM

yeah the hood
i talked to my friend and he said that it just went away after a while. he had no idea what it was but it went away before he got it checked out, so maybe yours will go away too

is the noise on hard lock both ways?... if it is then i would just ignore it lol...
as far as the liteness of steering etc check to see if your steering rack boots are leaking... make sure the vacuum lines are still on the power steering pump etc
how tight is your belt?

das 12-07-2004 10:10 PM

just checked the belt and all seems fine,

any ideas about removing the air flow meter btw ?

Thanks again

HI
Sounds like your belts poss slipping/partialy.usually on start up when rubber is cold.Sometimes just on a certain load to the pump ie on lock. The belt does not have to be very slack to slip ,just worn or smooth.Should be pretty tight but not so severe to load the pump bearings.
Get someone to lock it either way at cold + look yourselfe -youl prob see the belt skip.
:)
