Lightening Build

so i was contemplating my next move after finishing my engine rebuild (not touching that thing ever again). so with much thought im starting a lightening build or i guess i could say tear-out?

ive searched and it havnt found anyone actually posting pics of them mutilating their precious mkIII in hopes for better handling and speed.

also note that i probably wont be doing much mods to the engine since me and the girl are saving for the *whisper* 2jz vvt-i. yea i know everyone always says this but hopefully ill follow through. hell i did the rebuild right?

anyways why put any more money into this n/a? so now its weight reduction and suspension (paint, tint, speakers, and rims for the lady. gotta make her happy too right?)

whats coming out?

1. a/c (already got a girl and she doesnt want hers either)
2. rear windshield wiper motor
3. front seats replaced
4. rear seats removed
5. carpet, sound deadening crap.
6. have AAA card so tire and jack is removed, corolla s is daily driver anyways
7. i dont know for sure on this but wikipedia (yea im a nerd) says the manual transmission weighs less than the auto? i was going to do this swap anyways but hell if it takes off more weight then im cool :)
8. cruise control
9. battery relocation

dont think were going to take off anything more than this. were only taking off what we know we can fix and re upholster. im hoping that this as well as suspension mods will bring out some performance. and hey, its fun :)

ive been trying to research on how much exactly everything weighs but it seems like everything is just guestimates soooooooo

IM WEIGHING EVERYTHING!!!

i hope this thread helps those that want to do the same.

907mge 03-25-2010 02:02 PM

Why worry about speakers when you're going to remove the interior? They won't sound good with all the sound waves bouncing of sheet metal plus the magnets weigh more.

midwestmk2 03-25-2010 02:27 PM

Unless you start buying fiberglass or carbon parts lightening a Piggy is a futile effort.. Im also with 907mge. Speakers make no sense without the upolstry and sound deadening material and those magnets are some serious weight.. Big rims also mean more unsprung weight aswell so beware of that too.. Im in the process of building my MKII agian and there will be no electronics in the car except the lights, not even the ECU.. My goal will be 300hp+ and 2500lbs when finished..

cvbikeguy 03-25-2010 02:42 PM

i believe i did state that i will be re upholstering the car right? and how big of speakers do you think im getting? also the next rims i want to get are the MKIV's and if im mistaken they arent that much heaver. yes they are 17's instead of 16's i believe. more rotating mass. but im not getting "DUBS". haha dont worry im not going to strip off weight just to add heavier weight. although im sure once i swap the engine these modifications will mostly show up in handling and less in power. doubt ill miss the N/A

more or less i do hope this is useful for others to see the effects and to see if its even worth it for their own vehicle. who knows the outcome but at least they will see the results and work it took and decide for themselves. :x:

cvbikeguy 03-25-2010 04:44 PM

im sure this is achievable. 400 including tranny is what i want.

its raining so ill do some more once it stops

btwilson86 03-25-2010 05:36 PM

Haha.... I never thought that the spare weighed so much.... Good luck with the stripping, be sure to keep up on those pics. This will be very helpful

cvbikeguy 03-25-2010 05:42 PM

thanks. this is getting pretty interesting. i wonder with swapping the rims with mkIV's, manual tranny i can actually get it under 3,000.

cvbikeguy 03-25-2010 06:21 PM

having a hard time finding the exact weight of the supra. its n/a, automatic (fml) , and non sports package (tems, LSD, headlight washers and LSD. correct me if im wrong) so im thinking its in the 3450 zone. any info would be appreciated

Green7mgte 03-25-2010 10:03 PM

i know these cars weigh allot. but actually seeing the number makes my jaw drop everytime.

btw i love that supra commercial

cvbikeguy 03-25-2010 10:25 PM

yea i know. i like how big they are. i dont like the weight. after looking at the weight list it looks like i may be able to shed 400 lbs including the tranny and rims. which makes me wonder once i change the suspension if the replacement parts will be even lighter.

hmm i wonder how it will handle. im still a major newb but it makes me wonder how the car will be at 3,000 lbs and POSSIBLY lower with this strong engine. too bad its not turbo. and still handling with...

suspension mods+weightloss=?

lol i havnt seen an MKIII under 3000 and still have a decent interior

907mge 03-25-2010 11:44 PM

if you are trying to go for weight loss consider the gas in the tank about 6lbs per gallon

also i have riden with people at autox and having a passager in the car does not seem to really effect lap times

also depending on how much you want to spend, you can get lighter weight rims as well as relocating the battery to the back will take weight from the front and put it in the back

cvbikeguy 03-30-2010 09:47 PM

sorry for the lack of update. had a small leak from one of my injectors and were also looking into the r154 swap. more updates will come soon

cvbikeguy 04-10-2010 09:17 PM

37 more lb after cruise control, trunk crap and half of the a/c set up. yea i know the car is getting messy. my cousin might do the upholstery.

Green7mgte 04-10-2010 09:42 PM

gutting

so im on with the same ideas on losing as much weight as posible.do you have any pics of your car now that its gutted? i was thinking of even a really thin carpet to cover up all the raw metal, or even rubberized spray to absorb some of the rattle and amiance now that will come. any ideas?

cvbikeguy 01-10-2011 06:13 PM

Sorry the car has actually blown on me again. I ended up selling it with my r154.

Currently I have a 07 civic Si now. Im doing the same ol stuff tho. I just relocated the battery thursday and will be keeping the stock seats but gutting out the airbags for weight.

What are your plans with your car?

I was leaning towards the same thing with the carpet. Ive heard of people removing the sound deadening for a lighter, newer material.

mike91 01-10-2011 06:42 PM

ya i was thinking that the rubber spray will a lot easier and less time consuming. basically i want to get the car ready for a track day,or even some drifting, but still able to use as a daily driver. i dont have enough time and money to build a 500+ engine but with the simple bolt ons if i get 3-350 HP i will be more than happy. i figure with a lot of wieght loss ,even with less hp than most cars now i'll still have a good chance of shutting some cars down. going for as much of a sleeper look as possible and its been working. hhahaha we'll see how long that last. when that doesnt work....... NOS! LOL

907mge 01-11-2011 12:34 AM

That k20 will be loud running at vtec with no interior. Especially with an aftermarket exhaust. But anyway puting in a rubber coating of some sort kinda defeats the reason for weigh reduction. This site has a product for what I think you might be looking for with weight specs.
