I read everywhere about shimming the wastegate, but nobody actually explains it well, and photos would help too. Would be nice to be able to know exactly what you're doing, since it's one of the cheapest ways to add power. I have a good idea of how it's done, but there are a few things that I have heard, but the info is scattered. How much do you shim, and what's the thickness of the shim for 1psi? It would be cool to have it in a table or something to have a way of knowing how to safely do this.
Every good link I find goes to supraforums...of course I can't get into it for some reason to even read  So, I'm left looking elsewhere... |

omg, LOL, so not fair, I googled for hours without finding that...
|
shes good...

hehe... well i searched on sf coz i thought there was a faq there
i was gonna steal it... but couldn't find it.. in the too hard basket... and i knew sogi had one ;) |
I recently bumped into a MkIII owner who had a pretty tuned vehicle. I bought his HKS downpipe off of him for $80. Anywayz, We talked talked for a while and I was telling him how I recently purchased my vehicle and I'm in the infancy stage of my topend rebuild. I mentioned that I wanted to shim my wastegate but he strongly advised against it due to frequent and unpredictable boost spike and creep.
This is the 1st I've heard someone tell me anything negative about shimming. All over forums it seems like this is a preached method of gaining easy boost. Even in the link it states it's safe. For a forum to condone a bold statement like that, says a lot, meaning there is much more than one person backing it up. I'd rather be safe than sorry, but I am really tempted for going with cheap and easy power. Is there anyone that agrees or disagrees? Opinions? |
my car would only hit 4 to 5 lbs so i shimmed it now goes over 8 (i think, needle above 8 lbs) its like a new car. i think it can hang with my mach:dunno:. oh not to highjack but isnt are cars stock boost around 8 lbs anyways? on that note any reason why i was only hitting 4lbs? sorry not highjacking thread. heres this website http://www.supras.nl/index.php?optio...d=43&Itemid=59

No, you didn't jack the thread dude, this was an old thread I bumped, it's cool. That link you posted is pretty good info, it also suggests shimming is "safe". But it's articles like this that still make me question how safe it is. As for stock boost, it's 6psi. I've heard automatics, on average, are a little lower.

my car is a five speed any suggestion on why?
|
What kind of gauge are you using?
|
stock guage
|
It's possible that your stock gauge is inaccurate. It's also possible it could be a close representation of your actual boost? What breathing mods have you done?
As for the topic, no one else wants to chime in here? |
personally i would recomend an aftermarket gauge, incase you ever blow a waistgate vac/boost reference line like i did.. I looked down and i was at about 20 psi... and stock gauge pegs at 8 so youd never know it if it ever happened to you.
and i like to adjust boost inside cab with moddified manual air regulator, but thats just how i roll... bleeder valves work pretty good too and way cheap...so will the washers just dont over do it... |
i shimmed mine today
wow what a diffrence i thought i would shimm this turbo while i wait for my new stuff to get here, what a blast on my way home from work, only takes about 20 minutes to do to,i only put in 3 washers but they looked alittle bigger than normal so i only put in the 3, my stock gauge would bary when i laid into it would let loose even easier thanx for the thread was lots of fun
|
The factory boost is 6.7
|
Bullz_EyE everything is stock but the shims. Just had to try it out. What is a good aftermarket?
|
I think that joel williams way sounds good and safe. I will take shims out on my next day off. But its fun!!
|
i wouldnt go over 10 psi on stock ct-26, i killed 2 stock ct's doing that..
and i would not play with a boost valve untill you upgrade your boost gauge 4 sure.. nice piks on your other post.. gj and happy boosting. |
Would I be safe doing this with 3 or 4 washers on a totally stock supra? This is just too good to resist, but I don't want to mess anything up.
Also what is the average price for a decent gauge? Im looking online and they seem pretty expensive (for me). |
i have four shims and its a new car no problems for 600 miles or three tanks worth of fun
|
Shimming the wastegate is fun! And a cheap way to make power!
|
Thread necromancy I know but just a quick q, everyone is talking in terms of washers but has anyone ever measured the actual thickness in case someone comes across a batch of thicker washers & toasts their baby?
Also, on the subject of toasting & the question of boost spike/creep. Wouldn't 'yotas fuel cut save the motor & give a hint that something's wrong provided you took action as soon as it happened? And I'm considering going for maybe 4/5mm worth of shimming, as from what I gather (although it's not so clear hence why I asked) that would take it from 6 to about 10/11psi? |
is there another way of shimming it cause mine is shimmed and i can not figure out where its shimmed at. i bought it from a old white dude. he said he shimmed 2 washer but there is no way of showing that he shimmed it. that is the only way i know how to shimmed it too. but there is no washer right there, is there another way???
