Default Engine Ticking

OK got a 1990 Supra turbo. I have replaced the power steering pump and most all hoses on the turbo side.

Now I am tackling a oil leak and ticking nose under the hood. The number 3 cylinder head gasket is breaking all up with lots of oil around the plugs and on top of the head. All the 14 mm plugs where more or less lose. I have all the hoses and gasket coming. So I checked the valve clearance to find where the ticking is coming from. All the intake are between .007 and .010 most being at .009.

The exhaust are running from .011 to .014 most in the .012. So I have one out at .014 and two out at .013, is this far enough out to get the ticking sound.
With most being right at the limit of being out worth going ahead and replacing them also. I will try and swap some around and see if I can get the three back in tolerance, but if not will local part stores have the shims.
Is there a chance the ticking is coming from the #3 head gasket.

Thanks SuperX

Acceptible clearance for intake shims: .006" - .010" (.15mm - .25mm)
Acceptable clearance for exhaust shims: .008" - .012" (.20mm - .30mm)
Acceptable lobe measurement details are here: http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...aspx?S=EM&P=48

You are a good amount off, but it's hard to say given just the clearance with cam clocked away from the valve... you need to measure both clearances and the lobes for an accurate picture... for now check the cam lobes for signs of excessive wear or marring.

While you're in there you might as well pull the shims and buckets and check to make sure a keeper didn't come out and then re-shim to the proper clearances.

Another common cause of tension due to ticking are the injectors... some injectors are just plain loud. Hard to be entirely sure until you listen to everything with a stethoscope though.

Didn't even think about the injectors!!!
I will measure the lobes today and see where they are at.
Thanks

Do you put sealant on any other parts other then the corners of at the front of the valve cover gasket, like any where around the #3 cover.
