Head Gasket

Do the cams have to be out to torque the arp head studs?

And is it very hard to do a hg on a 7mge ?

And also would it be safe to reuse the t- belt if it looks good, it was only replaced about 10,000 miles ago?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

it is way easier to torque the head down without the cams in and if ur going arp head studs i found it easier to but the washers in the head before placing the head on the block. make sure u take your time if u have never done it before and pictures of before may help u when ur putting it back together.
as far as the timing belt i would do it anywas while ur there just for peace of mind sake and the fact that it is only like fifty bucks if that

yeah but does'nt the main pully have to come off?

supra.7mgte 02-17-2010 11:55 PM

the crank pulley u mean? yes it does and people have problems taking it off but wut i did was heat the bolt up with a tourch and then a good impact gun takes it off no problem.. just make sure u dont damage the pulley cause they are like 750 from the dealer. but if u do heat up the bolt u will need to replace it but its only like twenty bucks

also do you know of a good gasket set, the one from toyota seems a little expensive and does not seem to include enerything needed

supra.7mgte 02-18-2010 07:14 AM

well if u just want to got oem replacement there are three verisons of the stock gasket(for canada toyota there is). made sure u get the newest one.and then for like the valve covers cam seals and intake and exhaust i just went to a local parts store and got it... in all i spent about five hundred on gaskets but that includes the head gasket and every single gasket for the top end.

if u use a oem replacement gasket dont torque it to the 58ftlbs that is the factory spec cause u will be in the spot that u r now not to long down the road. i would recommend eighty or eighty five but do torque them in sequence that is is recommend by toyota. i would also recommend arp head studs if u are not sure on wut ur using

yeah i have the toyota manual for it which helps alot, do you know of a good and safe way of cleaning the injectors

907mge 02-19-2010 12:30 AM

oh and also is it worth having the valves redone while the head is off?

supra.7mgte 02-19-2010 02:50 AM

i would imagine that break clean woukldnt hurt injectors. but not to sure i replaced mine cause my top end is all brand new.. depends on how the valves look when u pull them apart it might be worth doing

Techron's about the best cleaner you can run through the injectors. For a better clean you really just need to send them in for servicing... the screens should be replaced and the injectors utrasonically cleaned. Generally, you'll pay anywhere from $10 to $20 each and that includes replacing screens, ultrasonic cleaning, testing for leaking and flow testing (so you know if you've got a bad apple in there somewhere).

I would not try brake cleaner in them... nor any other flammable solvent, you have to supply electricity to the injector to open the pintle; apply for too long and you fry the coil; create a spark and you're going to be waiting for your hands to grow back.

It's definitely worth getting the valves lapped, valve stem seals replaced and shims replaced as needed for proper cam clearance while the head is off. Also have the head vacuum tested and inspected for any signs of cracking.
