Towing an MKIII
Anyone know the best way to tow a 87 Supra on a tow dolly? I would rather not take the driveshaft out, i think itd be all right to just put it in neutral and pull it like a regular vehicle.
Any comments, suggestions, or past experiances would be helpful, ill be moving this friday so if you read this after 12/18/09. I ve already left but feel free to still post as it might help someone else tow. Thanks scaggsj |

You have two real choices if it's an auto... either drop the driveshaft, or load it on the dolly by the rear wheels.
If you load it normally (front tires on the dolly) just putting it in neutral won't cut it as your transmission internals will still be turning because of the back tires, but the transmission fluid they need won't be pumped through the system. This will not do your tranny any good at all. Now, if you load the back-end on the dolly, you can tow it but you'll have to be careful about towing it too fast as the front-end will want to shimmy. It's not fun. I've towed mine this way, but it's not something I would want to repeat unless I had no other alternative. |

Like I said, it wasn't fun (285 around Atlanta is never really pleasant, less so when they've got concrete barriers right up against the edge of your lane) but it did work. Making sure your tires are inflated properly will help some.:bouncy:

Thanks for all your input. Ill pull the Drive shaft. I just wasnt sure yes its an auto too, but im working on that.lol. Well I guess Im heading to Jacksonville Friday my 87 really has not been liking the cold weather here in missouri so we are looking forward to that Florida weather. Thanks Made it to Florida, the Supra is likeing Florida alot better. Deffinitly the way to tow it is without the driveshaft although doing it I found I need a new center support bearing bad. I also have some vibration now that gets worse as I go faster probley the bearing.

check and see if you put it in the same way it was before. even if you move it one slot over will throw off the balance. i found this out on my s10 when i did u-joints.

Thanks Ill check both of those the center bearing has at least 1/2" of play you can almost touch the top and bottom not quite a little exageration. It clanks real bad when you go from p or n to drive or rev. So it needs changing anyways and Ill recheck my marks I made didnt have white out so I used wifes fingernail polish and it was harder to see than I thought so thats a possibility although Im pretty sure I got it never hurts to double check. Thanks to you to Cre, Ill def check that out cause It kinda slid a little out and I slid it back in I dont think it moved but I thought it was just one way.

Just load it on a flatbed tow-truck. It's pretty simple.

I HATE having my car towed... they almost took the bumper off unloading it the last time it scrubbed so hard.... and I don't even have a lip installed.

Yeah, that body kit i have on mine doesn't help anything. When the HG blew I had to load it up and take it up to the garage. When the front lip comes close to hitting the ground get you a peice of a plank or something... Put it under both front wheels, so it will just roll on top of the planks and elevate the front end until it hits the bed. It's seriously that simple.
