Check engine light
My check engine light has been coming on for over 7 months...I have an 88 Supra Turbo. It's mind boggling, I have no clue what it could be. It only comes on when I accelerate for about 3-10 seconds. When it gets up into the higher RPMs or when it shifts gears, I'm not sure. It does it sometimes when I start the car up and rev it up real high, but that's rare. Do the sensors go bad on these cars a lot? If so how would I fix this? It's going into that stupid safe mode or whatever and my power is gone.
Any suggestions?:dunno: |
I'd have to guess it's not a sensor... but I'm not a mechanic... However, since it's consistant to certain conditions, and not others, my technical background would dismiss the sensor as the culprit... any way to check your computer codes and find out the code that's generating the check engine light? With that code, you could get pointed in the right direction for diagnostics...

Without pulling your codes it's going to be difficult to tell you where the problem is.
|
That's where I'm running into some difficulty.. Nobody around here has OBD1 they all have OBD2...or genesis so yeah. Is there any other way I could get the codes read?
|
You need the TSRM
Click this link to the TSRM on-line. Starting on page FI-23, there is the procedure to extract the codes from the ECM using a jumper wire and reading blinks on the 'Check Engine' light. Then, just look up the codes listed in the TSRM. Even if the light is now off, the codes are stored until the memory is cleared.

Thanks man, that helped a ton!
I got 34 and 52..so it says Turbocharger, Air Flow Meter, or the Intercooler system for 34, and either knock sensor circuit, or the knock sensor for 52. I'm not a mechanic so I have no clue what it could be, we recently had to gut the catalytic converter because water got in the system and just destroyed the insides of the converter. So there's hardly any back pressure, and my BOV doesn't go chhh anymore =( Maybe that could be a problem.. But idk about the 52..any help with either of them? |
With lack of power, No sounds from the BOV anymore, and the codes, I'm guessing the turbo is not spooling properly. You may have to look at the turbo, and determine if it needs a rebuild.

I had a friend look at the Turbo yesterday, and he said that the wastegate isn't opening properly. As in not at all.. I'm guessing that's the problem. Thanks for all your help, you really did help a lot. I appreciate it. :bigthumb:

sensors
New to the forum here. About your problem, I would recomend also looking at the knock sensor. It is located in the middle of the block underneath the intake manifold. My car has a few electrical problems still but i do know from experience that the knock sensor can help.
My question: Why is my check engine light on when the battery is connected? the key is not in the ignition( obviously the car is not turned on.) And the car is drawing mad power away from the battery. A brand new battery is almost dead after a few hours of being connected to the car. |
You should start a new thread, instead of hi-jacking this one.
But, it sounds like you have relays stuck on. Run through the wiring diagrams in the TSRM, looking for relays associated with the ECM. |
