PLEASE HELP ME!! Supra battery :(
 

Hey, So i recently bought a 1989 Toyota Supra(no turbo). And since I bought it, there has been some issues, I love the car, but I really need it to work properly.

My engine does not turn over everytime i try to start the car. When i turn the key, the engine makes a clicking sound, and does not start. The volt meter in the car still reads out around 12 V, and if i were to touch some jumper cables together it would spark, but the engine still does not start.

I have taken the car into a mechanic and he said that the battery just didnt have a full charge on it, He charged my battery for 12 hours, It worked fine for almost two days, but now, the same thing happens, the engine wont start...

Car has new starter, Also has a lot of extras in the car, (Stereo, speakers, neon lights..)

So, if you have any ideas on what the problem could be I would really appreciate it.

Have you had the alternator checked out? with all the extra stuff you have on there, you probably need a higher output rated alternator to keep the battery charged and run all the electronics you have.

Ditto. Also, do you have a volt meter? I'd rather rely on a volt meter rather than the one in the vehicle. If you have one....with the car on your batter output should be reading somewhere in the 14 volt range, if not chances may be your alternator isn't charging it up enough to give you enough juice for a start.

My biggest alternator nightmare came after I installed a deck, an amp and two 10's and crossed the subs and spliced the rear speakers off the amp as well... I must've replaced ~4 alternators in total before I got rid of the car...

The most noticible thing I've seen in all my alternator issues is: "If you get a jump, the car only lasts a couple of minutes (if that) after you seperate the jumper cables from the battery. Denoting that your battery did have enough charge to start and run, but is not getting that power back from the alternator and the battery can no longer support your distributor."

Def. check w/ the volt meter before spending the $$$ and time to swap out the alternator.. just to make sure that is the issue... But it definately sounds like that's it...

Do the starter-wiring mod which is described in various places around the web. Doing so provides better current flow to your starter than what your 20+/- year old wiring is likely to be providing, and a lot of the time fixes the problem when even replacing the starter and/or the battery doesn't fix it.

The alternator output should read about 13.5-14v while the car is running. Check your signal wire at the starter; it's the smaller wire that us pushed in next to the main wire. If it isn't connected properly you'll hear that clicking soung from the open circuit near computer.

I had the same problem with my non turbo car when I got it. The guy told me it was the battery, because it seemed the battery was keep dying. One day it completly didn't turn over, but the battery was completly charged. I took it to a toyota mechanic and said it was the starter, a few days later it did it again. So I took it back down there and he said that the starter was getting to much power to it and it was shorting out. So he put a fuse between the battery and the starter and it hasent done the problem yet. Hope this helps
