Headlight Wattage
 

Hi guys, just have a quick (potentially dumb) question for someone. I've got an 88 supra non turbo with a crappy $40 H4 headlight conversion kit and I've been looking everywhere for whether or not I'd be able to throw some 100W bulbs in or not. I was just curious if there'd be a problem with melting wires and such as that would not be very fun to deal with (I've only had this car for 6 months so I'm still learning how everything breaks... I mean... comes apart.:D) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Yes, you can run 100w bulbs, but there's something to do before you run them... do a good rewire job for your headlights with heavier gauge wiring. Maybe install a good relay as well. The 20 year-old wiring for our stock headlights isn't good enough for reliable, thorough illumination with even our stock headlights, much less a high-watt set of H4 bulbs. Do the rewire first, test the results and then decide if you need to go with the 100's.

Oh, depending on how cheap and poor quality your housings are, you might want to invest in a good set of housings, probably Hella or Cebie. Cheap housings usually do a lousy job of proper light dispersal and control.

Thanks, I'll have to try that when I'm feeling brave enough. I'm almost scared of breaking something as it is a 20 year old car. I do, however, have a parts car so if I'm really worried about it I suppose I could perform experiments beforehand. One thing I've definitely found (mainly from disconnecting the horrid factory alarm) are the very tight spaces that the components like to hide in. For a big person such as myself, it is quite challenging. Back to being more on topic, I know that I'll be able to find the location of the relay in the online TSRM manual, but is the wiring relatively easy to follow? Or is it a pain in the butt like everything else? Thanks again!

One thing I should have said in the other thread (# 10 posting) is that the part # CIBIE CIB082463 (H4) R180 is for a UK right-hand drive supra.
