89 supra-- way overpriced?
 

hi, brand new to the forum but frequent the 3rd-gen 4runner site.... I am considering getting a 3rd-gen supra. they are quite rare in nebraska, but i happened upon an ad for an 89 turbo with only 78k miles. leather interior; p/w; p/door locks; p/seat; cruise control; tilt/telescope steering wheel; auto transmission; new tires; no history accidents or body damage. It is totally stock except for aftermarket stereo, but he has the original too. I went and took a look at it yesterday and it is what he said. the driver's seat is worn where all toyotas wear, but otherwise it is about a 9/10 condition. he recently replaced timing belt and gaskets and seals about 4000 miles ago.
so.... he wants $8500 for it, and doesn't really need to sell it. He is a retired guy and it has been his 3rd car for years; I don't get the sense he needs the money, so i think he is pretty firm on price. Just looking for advice on price-- is it way too much? of course i would have it checked out by a mechanic first, but i would prefer seeing a car and having it checked out and not having to have it shipped like on ebay. thanks, i appreciate it.

That’s a lot of $`s for a 20 year old car, especial with the reputation of head gasket failure on these Supra`s. Bit suspicious of the seat wearing with 78k but I suppose it depends on how often you get in and out over that period of miles. Or perhaps he has a habit of putting his tools in is back pocket. $ 4,300 tops for that in the UK. By the way all those extra`s you mentioned are bog standard for the MkIII including air con, cruise, electric everything etc, except leather seats and Auto.

i wouldn't pay more than $5,000. its completely stock (other than the stereo) and it is 20 years old. it may be rare but there are cheaper ones out there that are in good condition. if you are seriously looking at getting one i would keep looking.

thanks, that helps. it's just hard to know how much things are worth, how much i could resell it for if i needed to. anyone have ideas on where else to look besides ebay/ craigs list/ autotrader/ cars.com?

i got GF's car up for sale on SM 3500 very nice car... needs little work... 102k miles....

I wouldnt pay 8k for a MKIII no way.... well if it has 10k miles on and was garage kept maybe

Just found this on Autotrader, ok it’s in the UK and non-turbo. GB pounds 2,995 = $ 4.363 at today’s exchange rate. If the description is true, that would be a fantastic buy for someone. Only $63 above my original estimate.

im not sure of many other places to look for cheap cars but i know if you are still looking to buy one just keep checking on craigs list and ebay. from my experience a good deal will usually come up eventually you just have to be kinda patient

i just bought a 89 turbo with 109xxx miles for $1200 + a 49cc scooter. It's mechanically sound but it aint pretty. lol
