Potential Supra Owner

Hello! I'm a sure threads asking things such as 'Is thIs a gOodd deeLl?' Are a dime a dozen, but here I am... adding to the collection, ha!

A buddy of mine has a 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo: 207,000 miles Automatic (shifts great, very smooth shifting), power everything (pass. window motor is shot) a/c and heat both work. No obvious fluid leak, other then a little bit of oil. Needs interior to be re-done, Its in pretty bad condition. The body is fine though, no dents or dings, good paint. Has a pretty decent exhaust system, no fart can (thank god), but has no cat converter, he had that removed. Has a practically new turbo and under the hood is pretty clean. Anywho, the point i'm getting to is this, the engine has a slight knock, but it isn't your typical knock its real un-rhythmic: speeding up and slowing down, not with the idle speed at all. At high rpm's it only knocks a little bit faster then at idle. And from time to time, the knock goes away completely, then comes back seconds later.

He's loves the car to death but is planning on rebuilding a '95 Cobra Mustang and needs room, so he is going to sell me the car for $300 if I want it.
My question is, I've seen that I can get myself a replacement motor for around $900 for a good decent low milage, and I hear rebuilds run you around 3k?? Yeah, so my question is, should I do it? And if so, how difficult would it be to drop in the replacement 7m-gte? I hear the supra is the most difficult car to work on. Would it be better to hire out the work? I've done engine work off and on for a while now, both with the Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, and a '97 Mustang GT. Both of which were more or less fairly straight forwards. Just wanting some pointers I suppose.

P.S. It has a good sound system in it, and brand new drag tires on it (less then 50 miles) And the Targa top doesn't leak.

Any chance he'd sell some parts? He'd make more money that way... PM me, I'm interested.
