Toyota ATF IV and dexron II are OK. I made the mistake of using dexron III some years ago and ended up with a loud buzzing noise coming from the tyranny, (dexron III is a GM fluid and not meant for the A340 boxes) I quickly drained it out and filled up with dexron II. You probably already know this; when you undo the train plug you will only be able to drain out about 2-3 litres, most of the fluid is held in the torque converter. Toyota ATF IV is the best, but expensive in the UK.

As for the stiff whell, you might want to check that the vacuum lines that run to the powersteering pump are connected. They're supposed to speed the engine up a little bit at an idle so that your steering is easier at a dead stop

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I know I won't be getting a complete flush, but since I don't know what's ever been done to the car or if things were maintained, I'm taking it one step at a time. I want to make sure everything is up to par before I start modding anything. Coolant's been done, bleeding the brakes are next, then oil and filter change and the diff. Took me a long time to get rid of the smoke smell. I guess the prior, prior owner was a smoker. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions. I'm dreading the "blown head gasket" hopefully I'll be able to hold out for at least two more years.
