Noisy Valves
 

Hey guys, im having a issue with some noisy valves. I did the ole broom stick trick and the noise is loudest on the exhaust cam side. I forgot which one its technically called but im guessing its a tap, or tappet kinda like a bunch of marbles in a can.

There is no noise on decel or accel but lately I have been hearing it slightly at the start of accel. I have a turbo and my boost gauge is showing a slight vacuum leak at normal speed then when I release the pedal its a quick downward flick to 20hg. Thought this may be sticky valves so I did a one day pedal to the metal crankcase seafoam treatment (which did good in other areas and also ive never seen such horrible sludge come out when I drained it) but I had no luck with solving the noise.

Any ideas on wtf is going on? Clearence? Help is much appreciated thanks.

Most likely a valve lash issue. You can pull the valve cover off and check the clearances and then see what you need from there. Doing the actual adjustment is pretty time consuming (it uses shims so you have to replace each shim with the correct size)

Im still learning so hang with me, upon my research im still slightly confused about valve lash/lashing from the plethora of explanations on different vehicles.

Could someone please elaborate? I know about shims, but lash? Is that like something loose like a bolt? I find it easier to understand comming from fellow MKIII owners. Thanks

lash is just another word for clearance. adjusting valve lash is the same thing as adjusting valve clearance. You have to go in there with a feeler gauge and measure how much clearance you have, then you have to remove the cams and shims, measure what size shim was in there, calculate how much clearance was in there and then you can figure out what size shim you now need. dows that make sense?

yea that does, and ive read about it in the TSRM before and it just sounds like a pain in the ass with all those valves.

Oh its a real pain in the ass. But the thing is im sure you will find many of them are already in spec and very close, so you wont need to mess with a lot of them.
