??
how do i used that??

Chambers 09-14-2008 12:50 AM

Sounds like your tranny is slipping, check your tranny fluid. If its low, put some fluid in it, if its full then the clutches in the tranny or the torque converter may be faulty.

Good luck.

Used that? .... Not sure what you mean

Follow the instructions in the link for the self diagnostic instructions

yea my dad test drove it and he siad it was slippin
but how do i fix that?

The best bet you have is to talk to a "mechanic" at a tranny shop and see if they say its the torque converter or the tranny it self. Then drop your tranny yourself, that way you save a boat load of money then just take the tranny to get a rebuild or get a new torque converter and put it back in.

Even if you have the shop drop the tranny for you make sure to print out the section of the TSRM that contains auto tranny drop, rebuild, install, and give that to the people doing the work, that way if there is somthing they havent seen before they can get it done without hurting anything.

Good luck.

You are not going to fine a tranny shop open on sunday..
Make sure you go to a very reputable shop... not some half assed garage that says they rebuild transmissions to.. Needs to be a specilized shop that does only transmissions... IMHO..

and price wise.. Umm off top of my head.. if its slipping.. and needs total rebuild..
1200 up to 2000.....

if somone tells you they will do it for 400 or so..it prob wont last..

Yea I second everything said here, going to some crackerjack shop will guarantee future visits to another shop. I would check out the yellow pages for tranny shops in your area, give a few of them a call. Ask them if they have done Toyota transmissions before, and for quotes on rebuilds.

Good luck.

This happened to me and about 4 days later my clutch went out....

5upra lov3r 09-17-2008 12:52 PM

how much did it cost to fix?

Grandavi 09-18-2008 08:09 AM

All I know is, my 1998 Honda Oddysey will cost 3200.00 to rebuild. Am I gonna do it? nope... Major service on it... slipping gone. Clutches may be worn but at that price, I will sell it instead...

As well, the 1996 Taurus I just sold today slipped very badly (all the time). I went to get a quote to rebuild and they laughed at me. Apparently I own the 2 vehicles with the hardest trannies to rebuild. It takes an "expert" to do it right. They want 3400.00 to replace it and close to the same to rebuild it. I serviced it for 320.00 (almost fixed it too, only slips if you drive hard) and just let the new owner know prior what the issue was. Sold the car for 1000.00 although it was worth more if I lied and said everything was fine. Lying has a way of biting you later.. so I avoid that...

As for a Supra? no idea... it is a very simple task to pick up that phone and call the shop and ask. I advise NOT to take it to a dealership... but to go to a shop that specializes in transmissions. If you lived in Alberta I could let you talk to a guy who knows them intimately... :) I personally would do a major service prior to rebuilding if its going to cost over 1500.00. A clean transmission will drive far better than a dirty one and you may be able to eke out 10-30k on it before you have to really pay attention to it.

Also, from what I read (just read the lower part) your engine revs and the power takes long to get you moving... (like a low stall torque converter). Thats not usually clutch slippage, but is a faulty torque converter. Those are relatively easy to replace (if you have the right tools and a shop). Clutch slippage is usually when you put it into gear, it takes a second and then bangs into gear... or when your going through an intersection from a stop, you start out in 1st and then the engine revs high and then BANG.. second gear...

as for rebuilding an automatic yourself... its fun... but if you aren't mechanically inclined.. dont bother... lol. I will rebuild manuals.. they are fairly straight forward, but to rebuild an automatic is a little more complex.. and touchy... I have no idea regarding the Supra auto.. but I do know on the other 2 i looked at, after I talked to several transmission mechanics, I decide I would avoid that area. I dont do anything myself when I am not confident of success. Any time I have.. its cost me more than if I had someone else do it.

Those are my thoughts.. just remember.. I'm not an expert.. just an owner.

My tranny does something similair. If I'm at a dead stop in drive, and I give it gas, it just slips a bunch until I get to about 30MPH. I found out that if I start the car in "L", and then put it into "D" after I'm already going, there is no more slipping making me think mine is a more electrical issue (possibly solenoids or the ECT, etc...). Does your Tranny slip in "L" as well?

5upra lov3r 09-18-2008 10:43 PM

yea same here it doesnt slip on L
but i dnt want to drive it cuz i dnt now exactly now wats wrong so i dnt wanna mess it up even more.
ima take it to get checked if my dad gets home early enough
lol
but yea as soon as i do ima post exactly wat happened
:x:
