Hello everyone,

Im looking to get a bit more BHP out of my 1990 Supra 3.0 Turbo, it already has a full stainless steel system and would like a fair bit more BHP. Im guessing the easiest way is to make it boost a bit more?

So I guess what I would like to know is:

How much psi boot will it have as standard?

How much psi can I go upto reasonably safely?

How easy is it to make the turbo boost more psi? is there an newbies guide anywhere?

Any Ideas how much BHP I could expect?

Thanks for all your help.

Lawrence

there are many things you can do, assuming you allready have a bov, you can pick from a vast selection of boost controls, but if you dont have a METAL HEAD GASKET installed I would not even think about it, if you do then you can run the boost to about 10 to 11 psi before fuel cut, just rember the more boost you run the more fuel is needed. there is also a nice K&N short ram intake that will ditch that closed air box. the hp should be like a 25 to 30 hp gain (I think)

i would listen to him with out a metal head gasket i wouldent even run my car hard. i would do like he said about the air box and boost con. then i would run new exhaust. but if you want a more responsive turbo and a little more boost i would junk that nasty stock inter cooler. it creates alot of pressure drop. then look into some injectors. and a.f.m a stock 2jz fuel pump should do good for now.

also you could do some other little things to like run a cooler thermo like a 180, this will help out alot, nice set of plugs and some nice nippon or ngk plugs gaped just right at .031, like above the stock intercooler is crappy, you can find much bigger and nicer units on ebay or other web sites there not that much and help out alot, if you do get a metal head gasket and a boost contoller , and you do hit the fule cut of, a HKS fule defender type K will hepl out by deleting the cut of, get a down pipe run some 2/ 12 or 3 inch exhaust , get a oil catch can that will keep out nasty oil from your intake and restricking it down.
ive done these to my 88 turbo and i tell ya what i can tell a big ass diffrence.
p.s if you get a meatl head gasket make sure to get your head milled down so its nice and flat so it will seal properly, and make sure the block is nice a clean ,milling is only like 40.00
also you can get a lexus mass air flow meter, outta a 1991 to 1994 then you will need to put in at least 550cc injectors, this is my next job, and get some har piping for your ride to

i thought it was a type H fuel cut defender, I could be wrong

metal head gaskets are a waste on a street 7m supra. you can easily run 350hp from a t04'd ct26, lexus reimer upgrade, and a front mount, exhaust and filter all on a stock head gasket. it's not the gasket that is the problem. it's poor torque settings from factory. if you do the head gasket, get both the block and head skimmed to be true, arp bolts to the better settings (i don't know exactly what that is, but suprragirl does) and stock head gasket, do the above upgrades, and your on your way. for a street supra, thats nothing to laugh at.

to answer your questions:

How much psi boot will it have as standard?
usually about 6-7psi on a 7m-gte

How much psi can I go upto reasonably safely?
once HG is sorted, 10-11 is fine

How easy is it to make the turbo boost more psi? is there an newbies guide anywhere?
difficult to explain, but get a boost tap put into your boost control solenoid pipe from the turbo compressor housing, and away you go

Any Ideas how much BHP I could expect?
probably 30hp from 6psi to 10-11

hope that helps

you could also upgrade the intercooler pipes and intercooler if it hasn't been mentioned yet

the stock intercooler & pipe is extremely inefficient and strangles the boost

^ pretty good suggestions up there ;)

cept the 15psi on stock fuel system LOL tsk tsk :P

dude i dont know any one who would run 350 hp on a stock head gasket, my kp head gasket will hold up 22 psi, stock could not touch that, and under extreme pressure stock head bolts will actually stretch enough to blow the gasket

suprra_girl 07-13-2005 11:23 AM

*cough cough*

BHP

engine horsepower ;) very different to wheel horsepower

feel free to put foot in mouth anytime :P

the injectors canflow more than enough for that amount of air flow, and i don't see why the rest would be a problem. get past the boost cut, and it would be fine till 15psi.
