manual transmission

i am doing a conversion and i think i ran into a problem... i have the manual tranny and nothings in it the clutch and presure plate and all is out of it... theres no fluid in it... but the gears wont shift... the shifter moves left and right but not up and down... i was told it may be that the transmission sat for to long and i have to beat the hell out of it so it will start moving right again? should i just put the clutch and everything in it fill it with fluid and slap it in my car? and hope for the best? or should i have some serious questions about it? ... also... i went to my local canadian tire and i asked them what type of fluids i needed for it and they told me 80W90 gear oil... if thats wrong can someone please let me know i just spent alot of money on all this and i dont want anything to happen to it.... ( conversion + HKS metal head gasket and APR head studs almost completed )

Ok, first don't beat the crap out of the thing, that might mess something up :). Take your drive shaft and put the splined end into the tranny and turn it, while you do that have someone try to put it in gear. If it goes in gear then you may be ok, if it doesn't you may want to be looking to rebuild your tranny.

As for gear oil, yes, 80W90 gear oil will be the weight and oil of choice. I prefer Lucas full synthetics for all my gear oil apps.

Good to hear you are using HKS MHG and ARP hardware!!

Good luck.

yea... ummm i just bought the transmission for 300$ ... and it didnt come with a warrenty it was a personal sale... and i cant really aford to get it rebuilt nor do i have the time to... is there anything else i can do?

you say you can move it side to side, im assuming that means youre in nuetral. When you turn the input shaft, does the output shaft turn? Can you hold the output shaft to keep if from turning?

i really dont know man... i do know that i can turn everything inside and it glides like butter though... its so clean inside and out no stress cracks... and the clutch was still mint the presure plate and all was just amazing shape... i dont understand why there would be anything wrong with this transmission.

CyFi6 08-18-2008 05:04 AM

well, im not sure what else i can tell you. Its not normal for a transmission to not shift, so its not like i can say it sounds like its fine, cause i would be misleading you, but without any other information there's really nothing anyone here can say.

well do u think if i bolting the clutch and flywheel all together bolting the tranny to it and filled it with fluid if it might lube it into not being stuck?
cuz apparently this tranny only has 160k on it and my engines only got 37k from brand new... so i really dont wanna mess that up

CyFi6 08-18-2008 05:43 AM

well you really dont know the root cause of the problem. If everything in the tranny is clean and lubricated like you said it shouldnt be "stuck", so maybe its some kind of shift linkage problem. Are you sure youre pushing the shift lever hard enough? Did you try turining the input or output shaft while you tried to shift?

frostburn 08-18-2008 05:46 AM

im sure i did... and i bolted the shiter housing on... i just payed 300$ for it from toyota...... and i dont know how to check to see if the linkage is gone... could u possibly fill me in?

CyFi6 08-18-2008 05:59 AM

So to be sure, you bolted the shifter into the transmission properly and you can move it side to side, but not to the left and up, to the left and down, up, down, to the right and up, or to the right and down? If you bought it from Toyota im sure they tested it before they sold it to you... Again, did you try turning the input or output shaft as you shifted it? and when you turn the input shaft, does the output shaft turn also? If so, can you hold the output shaft from turning while you turn the input shaft?
