Black smoke indicates unburned fuel. A very rich condition. (and you must be rich if you can waste fuel like that) I had to throw a funny in !!!
You likely have a plugged exhaust. Cat converter. Disconnect the pipe at the header and see if it runs better. You won't get much for a car that won't run well, and makes the buying think its just a major project car, or parts car. As for getting $3k, never happen. I will soon be selling my 1989 n/a, READY now to drive across country on a hot summer (or cold winter) day, for $5k

ok so i did take the cat off and it runs way better! the cat is completely clogged, i put water in there after i took it off and it barely drains.
so the new ? instead of starting a new thread is where to get a cat? im gonna check ebay first.

Supra store has a high flow one that should fit a stock exhaust for about 100 bucks, but its a weld in. They have bolt on ones but they're only for 3" exhausts.
