Power Steering Pump and Fluid

Hi all, my power steering pump is starting to take a dump, it has destroyed three belts in the past four months and its now making a quite undesirable knocking sound. So I was wondering where should I look for a new pump, is the dealership my best bet?

Since I'm planning to get a power steering pump I will also fix the current leak, since it wont be leaking I will be able to run a higher quality fluid in it, so what type of fluid do you all recommend?

Thanks.

i just replaced my power steering pump last week and i got mine from Advance Auto for $100 and i had it the next day.

I went through 3 pstumps from advanced.

1 trip to O'rielly's and no more issues.

75$ and a warranty.

Wow, I'm not a fan of Advanced anyway, the only thing is that the closest O'rielly's is in Southern Virginia, some 300+ miles away.

I'll check into that, thanks.

Ok, so what kind of fluid are you all running?

supramacist 06-26-2008 03:36 PM

I run standard ATF. That's all I have ever used. In any of my cars.

JUst get a pump with a warranty. They're easy enough to change if you get one that's crappy. Advanced and autozone are definitley not my 1st stop for parts. But i must say. If they have what I need and I need it that day. I'll stop in..

i'm not crazy about advanced either but it is literally across the street from my house and there are no other auto parts stores around and the nearest toyota dealer is 20 minutes away so it worked for me. besides it was a simple repair and if need be will be a simple repair again.

i must admit though i've never heard of oreilly's

you MUST use ATF or you are going to eventually destroy your new pump too. I highly recommend you get the steering system flushed as when the pumps go bad debris can get into the racks small and delicate parts and cause issues.

Yea, I'm going to get a new rack when I replace my pump, it leaks to much to leave that rack in there and risk a new pump getting destroyed from crud getting in there. Thanks for the info.
