Car squeaking, please help
Within the last few days my '87 has developed a squeak. I've been able to narrow it down to the left side, but I'm not sure if it's a front or rear issue (or both).
I'm almost positive it's not the brakes because the squeak is constant. It actually seems to have gotten worse (or more apparent) as time goes on, which has me worried. It seems to be more audible at lower speeds, although I suppose that could also be due to less tire/wind noise. Anybody out there have any ideas on what it could be? And if so, any solutions? |
Does the noise stop when you start pressing on the brakes?
No, and it doesn't intensify either.
is it coming from inside the car or outside?
Outside, but not to worry, I took it by the mechanic today and turned out it was the front brake pads. They've been replaced and all is well.
I have the same kind of problem on the same wheel but new brake pads didn't solve the problem at all....Would you please ask your mechanic about real source of that sound?
Thanks! |
One more detail...I have found that my front brakes do not have any Anti-Squeal Shims at all..... is that normal?
No. That's not factory spec. The brakes should have anti-squeal shims if you don't want the squeaks to return.
okay thanks! I have ordered those already...
after installation of new front brake pads with new shims the car is still squealing (left side)...maybe that is bearing...how would I identify that?
Thanks! |
did you have the rotors turned?
no I did not. I would say that vibration almost doen't exist when I push my brakes...
They get glazed though, always worth it to get them turned or replaced, wouldnt be a bad idea to still do it
OK...it sounds like a bearing but I'm not sure about that.....the car has 112000 miles only...
Did the shims also include spring clips? These clips (2) go into those little holes on top of the pads, look something like wishbones, and work to separate the pad from the rotor when the pressure is off. This also helps eliminate squeaks.
To check the hub bearing, refer to the MK3 TSRM On-Line |
OK thanks.....the original spring clips are there so I suppose they are good...
