Locating Boost Leaks

Hello All,

Symptom: Car runs great (damn, not again!!!), turbo spools fast up to 250mm Hg then stays until shift. Checked all hoses and clamps, checked BOV. Found that the short 3" piece from the throttle body to 3000 pipe could be replaced, but wouldnt think its the problem. Also found that throttle body side BOV was old and hard (possible that clamp no longer has enough force to fully seal it against BOV) but also seems like the unlikly spot to fail.

What are your non destructive methods for finding a boost leak? I have stuck my ear all sorts of places it shouldn't be under the hood but can't loacte any suspicous noises. I would rub soapy water in any suspect places, but as the intake system would be under vaccum while parked it wouldn't do any good.......

Thanks in advance,

Colin Slade

Again. I'm an N/A. Forgive me.

Is a boost leak the same thing as a vaccum leak?

If you're leaking and you spray it with starting fluid will it raise your idle if you have a leak???

Just a thought. For what it's worth.

"diy boost leak detector" on google will give you hits on how to make one

Thanks for the help guys, I've tried to use propane to find the leak (similar to the start fluid method but with no results....)

I guess I will try the DIY boost tester, I know that the 3000 pipe outlet OD is 2 3/4" diameter, any idea of the turbo inlet OD?

Thanks in advance.

I guess if the boost test shows nothing, then my probelm lies between the throttle body and combustion chambers, or on the exausht side between the combustion chamber and turbo..... Would a crappy EGR valve cause this sort of issue?

Vacuum Piping

This is a vac line diagram. Just in case you want to check those.

It could be that simple...., just in case.

well done gays let me tell you a jokeAn old man named bet365 was in his golden years, but that didn't stop him from trying to pick up the younger ladies. He went to the local bar, approached a very pretty and very young woman and said, "Where have you been all my life?" The young lady takes one glance at him and says, "For the first half of it, I wasn't even born yet." by bet365 have a nice day today
