Bottom end rebuild or replace engine ?

Hi all,

im resonable new to these forums and very new to the Supra MKIII .....I have a slight knocking in the bottom end have cought it early so hopefully the crank is not damaged ! ....

Was woundering what you guys thought about replacing the bearings or replacing the engine with an Imported one with less then 100k on the clock ?

If i was to replace the bearings is there anything else you would suggest doing when im down there ?

I am not very engine literate:nuts: and i cant spell ...so please be nice !!

well you have got to weigh out your options. see how much it would be to replace the bearing themselves, and while your at it with the engine apart you might want to put in high perf. pistons/rings etc. if thats a little too pricey then u can probly pick up a cheap gte engine online and throw that sucker in. if you go that route make sure u throw in a new headgasket these things are prone to blowing them.

Not to counter what marc said, but buying a imported engine and not doing a re-build is not always a good idea, the previous owner of my car had a swap done by a local shop with no rebuild, turns out the engine has a valve shim problem and it taps like rod knock. You never know what you are going to get with one.

What you should do is get a stethoscope and listen around the engine to make sure your knocking sound is coming from the bottom end, like I said my engine sounds as if it has rod knock, it even sounds like its coming from the bottom end but when I took a listen with a home made stethoscope I discovered it coming from the head.

If it is coming from the bottom end you are probably going to have to pull the engine and go from there. Good luck!!
