Blown line going to EGR
 

My mother in law gave me a 89 turbo for X-mas and while driving to AR from FL check engine light came on then went out and back on again. On second time I put in neutral and the engine died. I put it back in gear again and it ran with loss of power and oil press dropped to 20 with no temp increase. It put out an exteme amount of black smoke. Stopped on side of road and lots of smoke comming from back of engine. Got it back home and the line comming from the back of the engine to the EGR is blown. Checked the turbo and it is fine but the engine will not crank. Is the loss of vacume causing all my problems due to the blown line? Mechanic is telling me I need a new engine, others are saying fixing the line will fix everything. Any opinions out there???

jus block off the egr
you will need two block-off plates
4 bolts, and silicone, or RTB
and that will block it off
ofcourese you need to shape the blockoff plates to fit the holes

So that is the cause of all my problems... (Oil loss, dead engine, smoke ect...) If I replace the hose will it fix it? Or is blocking off my only option

all it does it bring back exhaust to your intake,
its for emission, its suppose to lower your emission
and hence creating power loss,
check you state laws if you can do it,
cuz if you do, you probly wont pass emission anymore

Turns out the hose that blew might not be the EGR line afterall.. It is a about a 1 inch diameter hose that connects between the valve covers on the very back of the engine I think it is for heat. The line apparently either gave due to old age or exploded. However I am still at a loss on all the original symptoms. Could this cause a vacuum leak? But the oil loss is what I need to find out. There is what appears to be a hex head insert for a large allen wrench right in front of the line that ruptured that at the bottom of it has a theaded hole at the bottom and all around it is wet with evidence of oil and gunk. The other simalar hex heads on the head do not have threaded holes. I wish I had someone here local that I could compare with but I hope someone here can help. Apparently all the smoke that was comming from the car (white) during my breakdown was not from the exhaust but from oil burning on hot parts. When I popped the hood the majority of smoke was comming from the very back of the engine where that hex head and blown line were comming from..... I still have my fingers crossed I don't need a new engine..

Wow lots of threads on BHG's I guess this is most likely my problem. When I got the car the bird cage light was on and I serviced it and it came back on again 1 week later. Now I have a radiator that boiled over to the resevoir, as well as the "gurgling" sound, a blown heater hose, oil loss (Significant) the remaining oil is extremely clear (almost transparent). Is it worth fixing or should I get a replacement Japanese engine?

P.S I am not even close to being an engine mechanic

yeah I am thinking it is most likely you HG. Anti freeze is probably getting into your engine and burning with the fuel that is why you would get white smoke.

I never noticed smoke from my exhaust before the breakdown. Is it safe to assume that the massive amounts of smoke from under the hood means I probably warped my head? Is it salvagable?

i always been told that all it does it recirculates, exhaust gas to the intake
to reduce emmisions,
and with the hot gas from the exhaust, rather than the cooler air preffered is which causes hp loss
