Replacing Power Steering Hose - need help

Anyone replaced high pressure power steering hose? Do I need to remove the steering rack to get the new hose in between the rack and the frame?
I cut the old one out with a saw to remove it. Have the car on jackstands in the garage and need to put it back together on thursday night.

It is an 88 gte since the hoses may be different.

Why does the hose go around back anyway instead of comming straight down and across???

Can anyone with a shop manual look it up?

Here is the TSRM for the MKIII. It will a lot of the info you need.

Thanks, it has lots of good info in the manual. It shows how to rebuild the ps pump and rack. Unfortunately nothing about the high pressure hose and how to stick a 1/2 inch hose through a 1/4 hole :( . I think the way is to unbolt the rack and push it up while I stick the hp line beneath it.

Yea, I don\'t know what to tell you, I have a nasty ps leak but I think its the low pressure lines. Good luck.

My high pressure hose has a pinhole and I could see the fluit squirt out. It was right below the turbo in the rubber part of the line. I\'ll let you know how it goes.

A pinhole?

in retrospect, you could have welded it when the system was free of pressure...... sry, iknow that doesnt help now....

:stupid:Sorry there buddy the pinhole was in the rubber part of the hose.

Just in case anyone else will be doing it... To replace the high pressure power steering hose I had to unbolt the steering rack and pry it up to get the metal line through the tight space between the cross-member and the steering rack. The line feeds from the front to the rear. Then bolt the line to the mounting clamps for the hose and reused the rubber garmets. Use new copper washers on the banjo bolts.

Overall it wasn\'t that difficult but it took time undoing all of the bolts in a tight space. Hose is $60 at Auto Zone.

Wouldn\'t happen to have any pics of the process? Because that would make a good how to write up. Good to hear you got it together though!
