Year to Year MGE Swap changes

Ok so I have this 88 supra, its not that pretty and its not a turbo but I love it and plan to continue to do whatever I need to so that i can get it together and build it right.
A couple weeks ago my head gasket went and the drive train had 180K miles on it. SO I figured I would just swap out the engine and do the tranny while I was at it with JDM. I ordered the engine and it is obviously a later model year than 88. I just got a call from my mechanic saying its the wrong engine and wont fit because of the oil pump location and the pan will not allow it to fit. Now I know that any 7mge should swap and I went and got the casting number before they started just to verify it was a 7mge.
So whats the deal? Do I just need to swap my old oil pump and pan? I know the wiring harness is different in late models but the engine itself should work fine right?

If you use the oil pump and pan from your old engine it should then fit, before I bought my car, it had a JDM 7M-GE put in it and I can only assume they ran into the same problem, The engine wont matter if its pre/post 89 because a engine is an engine, its the wiring that wont work, I see you know that but it can't hurt in clarification.

From my knowledge and someone correct me if I'm wrong, there was no JDM MKIII Supra that came NA, the NA 7M came from another JDM car, I can't remember witch but if the pan an pump are diffrent then just use your old parts, but I would just spend a little money and get a new oil pump for a 7M-GTE. Hope this helps.

doesnt the post 89 use a diffrent crossmember?
i remember pple saying this cuz they say you can mount a 2jz motor without changing them
they also use diffrent mounts
cuz i had to reuse mine when i did my swap

Well yea, motor mounts on the frame have to be swapped if the block won't bolt up to the mounts, but I don't think that really applies to the 7M-GE.

the jdm 7m comes off a different car cressida you'll have to swap pan off your other engine might as well get a new pump while your at it cause it will be a pain to change it later

honestly u might want to consider a different mechanic..i just recently got a 2JZ for my 90 supra and had a similar problem..my engine came from japan and because all their cars are right hand drive everything on it..including the oil pump and pan..were backwards..if your engine came from a japanese car your prob. gonna have a few other issues swapping it but if you got a good mechanic it should be no problem

Swapping out the pump and pan was all it took. It really has nothing to do with the engine being from Japan, the cross member and pan design are just different between pre 88 and 89 and later. The new engine is in and runs A LOT better than the tired out old engine. Now once the tax refund comes in, she goes to the paint booth and gets a new set of coil overs.
I would be interested in details on your Jz swap because that is where this is all leading up to. I just needed to put in a new 7M to keep me going until I get all the parts together for the Jz swap.
