AEM fuel / ignition controller
Has anyone tried these things.
I have a 91 na 5spd 7m series. My ecu is shot. Someone mentioned this thing to me on this forum. I'm wondering if any of you have tried it and will it bypass the ecu?? Please and Thanks. |
Depends on if you get a stand alone or a piggyback fuel controler. Piggyback require a signal from the ECU to alter so you can tune your vehicel, a stand alone will just simply replace the stock ECU entirely, good luck.
|
The aem says it needs to piggyback the ecu for climate control.
Being as to I have done an ac delete. The f/ic won't work without that siignal still?? I'm getting mixed reviews. |
I just looked over this, AEM FIC, that is what you are talking about, right? Well the overview states "This system works parallel to the factory ECU......" which means it won't work without the stock ECU inplace. Sorry.
|
Yes. That's not what I was hoping for.
DO I need an igniton system and a fuel system? Is there a 1 pc. unit available for this application? I'm hoping you know something I don't because my research is turning up notta. |
If your wallet feels up to it you can get a standalone ECU from AEM that is completely tunable for $1,700. That way you can eliminate the stock ECU and have a powerfull tool. But other than that, I don't think your going to have much luck.

I'm going to have to e mail AEM or get a phone number.
I appreciate it. |
No prob, sorry I couldn't help more.
|
No prob. I only researched seriously for a short while yesterday.
I popped a chubby when I saw the f/ic. I thought surely the car gods were about to bless me and for no more than 500 bucks. |
hehehe, yea they are not allways looking out for the needie. :)
|
I dont know if it will work with your engine or not, but you might research Megasquirt. For under $500 you could build yourself or have somebody build for you a custom fully programmable standalone. Might be worth looking at anyways.

I recently found someone else that had a 91 n/a.
We plugged the ecu up and it works. So I'm back to the drawing board. Hopefully this problem is more simplistic than I originally thought. |
Nice, good to hear you got that ecu. Whats going on with the car now?

Damn thing starts and runs but is bogged down.
While reving under the hood you can tell it's not reving right. While it idles it sounds like a bad ass v8. Keeps throwing code 14. so as I noticed in another post. I have a lose clip for the afm. I was wondering the other day if that could do it, i mean it hooks up just fine and doesn't move but is obviously not hooking perfectly. Just got done tearing into her and resetting everything to tdc. Going from there. |
Bogged down how? Did it seem like just a timing issue or a ignition miss or something?
By the way, try some WD40 on the afm plug, that could help if its a somewhat bad connection. |
Bogged down as in not reving fully.
Feeling restrained. I sprayed starting fluid around all the vac lines and not even a shimmy from the engine. I know my afm connect isn't plugging very well. I wonder if you can hot wire that thing straight through? I keep throwing code 31 which is afm ecu. I trouble shot and it said if those were fine to correct running lean. I pulled 6 and that's not the case. The afm plug being faulty would make it throw a code. I hope. |
