Short shifter of a Mk3
 

Hey everyone i been looking for a short shift for my supra.I been asking around and everyone tells me all i can do is cut the shifter shorter but the gears will be the same.Does anyone kno where i can get one???

here you go. you can make yourself a shorter shifter with the one already in the car and a aftermarket shift nob that uses screws

Thanks i found one there is a guy on ebay selling them.Easy install just search for it.he makes them all the time

It's known as the "SOGI mod". If you want short and don't mind sacrificing leverage, have at it. Generally it makes for a notchier shifting experience. If you've ever driven with a real short throw shifter you will not be impressed. I'm not fond of the stock shifter's height, but this mod isn't where it's at, IMO.

im very interested in this mod....however i have some ???? if someone has done it or knows

1. on the 3 way to fit the gear knob, i like that he reused the original shifter and just cut it to make it shorter. however it just seams flimsy, i mean if you have to heat up the whole assembly and rip it apart with vise gribs, wouldnt you want to seal the two pieces back together with something? my thoughts would be that its gonna pull off one day driving. but idk. anyone?

2. If you choose to just use the lower part of the shifting assembly, i know ill need to tap it. however is the new base thick enough to tap it back to a stock shift knob thread pitch? he used a 10 x 1.50... i believe the stock is a 12 x 1.50?

If anyone has any more info that would be awesome. i just got my bushings today from driftmotion here in town and would love to do this. thanks

Some people have pulled the two pieces apart, cut both down and then reassembled with glue or RTV. Depending on how deep the shaft is still penetrating into the top portion this can still provide and extremely strong bond. If you've shortened it significantly I'd grind/melt/dissolve the original rubber, texture the inner rod and fill it like they did stock with a HIGH SHORE, two part urethane. I would use something with a little give though, not too rigid.

No, the inner rod is too thin do thread for a stock shifter. Either use a universal, thread for a different shifter, weld on a bolt end with the desired thread or reassemble like a stock assembly.
