Hey, ive been looking at this 84 celica supra for a while and I fianly have decided that athats the car i want. I'm going ot be taking it for a test drive tomorrow and then down to a shop to have it checked and i had a couple questions i havent been able to find answers for

Whats size engine is it
How much hp does it put out
Also what compression should it have
and what els should i look for so i dont get totaly ripped off and have to pay like double in just fixing it up, cause i just dont have the money

thanks

well if it's a celica supra it will have a 6 cyl motor, either 2lt 1gge or 2.8 5mge
i would suspect compression would need to be around 140ish just make sure it doesn't have a huge variance between cylinders
they are known to be very reliable and also check the rust.. they are very common for rusting
if it's a 1gge i think they put out about 160hp and similar with the 5m (but don't quote me on that)

good luck with it :)

Graeme, live in the US or not?
the 1G-GE was only available in Japan, NZ and Aus I believe only had the 5M-E (sohc), and in the United States, the 1984 Supra had the 2.8liter 5MGE that made 160hp and 163ft/lbs (if it was 5 speed, if automatic the 84 had the 150hp 83 engine)
The compression in the 84 manual = 9.2:1 (180psi) 84 auto 8.8:1 (164psi)

LOOK FOR RUST in the places were it will not be easy to repair, i.e. under the windshield trim, under the rear quarters, inside the hatch, whee wells, etc. make sure it steers good and tight
Parts are getting rare all over the planet, make sure you're not buying a junker. If something feels "bad" of "off", trust your instinct

I'm in canada, i just got it yesterday i love it so much, it runs great just a few things her and there that need to be fixed, like a bent tie rod and old ball jointsothere then that ther person before had put new tired and breaks and the dealer gave me a new batterie because it had been sitting there for a while and the old one was dead. Apart from leaky seals thats about it the compression was 170 in all exept two but the guy at the garage said it was probly just from carbon build up and not beeing used. Thanks for all yoru help and i shal be joining the forum shortly

thanks
